Kia ora e te whanau,

As we head towards the end of the third term for 2021, our students need to be in school and engaged with their learning.

Engagement with learning

Our senior students are tracking and monitoring their progress towards NCEA levels; their Deans, subject and whanau teachers are supporting them in this. It has been a difficult and disrupted time but we need to ensure we do not let the impact of lockdown hold them back from success. As they are completing assessments and getting to the end of their courses, they will be planning what next year’s study might look like and which subjects they need for their pathway. Some of those decisions will be reliant on the work that they do now, so please work with us to support our students to really focus on their learning as they finish the term.

Subject Selection

In preparation for the subject selection process which will begin early next term, our junior students have started a Careers unit through the whanau ako lessons. It is great for them to consider their futures and look at the opportunities available to them. There is lots of information available through the Careers Hub and they can book an appointment with the Careers Team whenever they want. Seniors will also choose their subjects next term and information about the process, the information evening and the timeline for selection will follow in the next few weeks.

Covid-19 Update

At school we are following closely the updates from the Ministry of Education as Alert Level Two continues. We are maintaining our support of mask wearing, social distancing and ensuring students remain home if they are sick. All classrooms have hand sanitizer available, and our teachers role-model the consistent use of this to aid hygiene.

Covid-19 Vaccinations with Te Puna Ora o Mataatua

Thank you to those whanau who have booked yourselves or your students in for a vaccination on October 1st at school through TPOOM. You will have received an email with the details. No students can book a vaccination directly without contact from the school with whanau and there will be no “walk-in” vaccinations on the day.

Student Leadership

Our new Deputy Principal, Jeff Greenwood has oversight of Student Leadership throughout Trident and is reviewing every aspect of the current leadership opportunities and creating a framework to involve all year levels in authentic ways to develop leadership skills. He will launch the Senior Student Leadership process for 2022 this week and we look forward to many students putting their hands up to be involved. The school motto of Kia Manawa Nui is so relevant when we see our young people summoning the courage to step into a leadership space and want to serve the school and its wider community.

Thank you again for supporting our teachers in their efforts to develop your students’ learning. Making sure that students arrive with their gear, have completed set homework and have had a good night’s sleep, gives your students the best chances of engaging with their learning and experiencing success.

Just before lockdown the Level 1 class were set to do the practical part of their course. After discussing what to do, Mrs Walters and the class decided that they could run the practical in their bubbles. Students had to (as much as possible) produce the product in their business plans. Some couldn’t due to grocery delivery, lack of skills or ingredients or equipment, but they worked around this. Students had to work with and collaborate with another bubble member to produce their product and ‘sell’ it to others. All had to have photo and/or video evidence and write an individual reflection. Mrs Walters says she "is blown away with what they have done! So innovative! Monopoly money, raided piggy banks and lollies were used for trading. Great work class.

Our Level 2 Business Studies students were set to do their community based activity just before lockdown. The assignment set was to have students raise funds or donate to a community group. With Mrs Walters, the class decided that they could still do this assignment, but just switch from "selling products and making profit to donate" to "making to donate to essential services". These students have been real troopers. They made all sorts and donated to: Vaccine centre in King Street, Testing centre in Kope, Police in Whakatane, staff at New World, cleaning staff at Whakatane Hospital, Eastpac Opotiki, Whakatane Hospital ICU, Whakatane Hospital maternity staff and Whakatane refuse collectors. The photos from some are just gorgeous, recipients were so happy.

Note all Level 4 and 3 guidelines were adhered to. Not only did the students do this once, they made improvements after the first round and ran the activity again.

At an important stage of the course Mrs Walters says "I was not going to give up on these internals and am so impressed with the commitment from these students."

A great assignment over lockdown has led to further learning back in the classroom as students share their learning with classmates and make these old family favourites for others. Well done Food Tech students!

Well done to Roczen Juan who is creating characters and designs for a computer game in Level 3 Design. Below is one of her character development pages. We look forward to sharing more of Roczen's design work for her folio.

Thank you to Gerrard McCarthy from MicroPico Systems who has donated two 375 Watt Solar PV Panels to our Y13 Engineering students Jacob Bridge and Asger Evans for their Farm Solar Water Pumping System projects. The panels are valued at around $800, a very generous donation. Combined with a 50% Grant from Trust Horizon this has made these ambitious projects achievable for these students. We have 2 Year 13 students building remote pumping systems for their farms - Jacob & Asger.

Prior to being donated these panels, as part of the overall project, Jacob and Asger:

- had calculated the energy demands and need up to 330W capacity

- were considering installation options

- had decided these will be ground based systems (likely on a frame mounted on a metal pole or wooden posts - they will fabricate these)

- decided the PV Panels will form a roof for the Solar Pump Controller (both have submersible pumps)

- were considering cost options/availability

- could purchase a range of options such as 2 x 170W panels or 1 x 330W panel

- may install more than 330W to allow contingency for extended poor weather events

Preparations for 2022's production Sweeney Todd are underway. To encourage our 2022 Year 9 students to be involved we are hosting a workshop where they will gain confidence to consider auditioning. After a month of not being on the court some of the Trident Basketball teams were back in action on Wednesday night with their semi final games.

The Junior Girls were the first game up for the night playing Te Kura Kokiri. These two teams have met several times this season both in the Tauranga Competition and EBOP Competition. It was always going to be a tough game but was even tougher without captain Serita Karauria due to sustaining a serious injury just before lock down. The Trident girls have come together well as a team and this played a major part in their 62-56 win tonight. With all players doing their role, this allowed space for Matahera Rurehe to score 7 three pointers.

The Senior Blue Boys team carried on their good season with a convincing 96-51 win against Bethlehem College B team. They will play Tauranga Boys Senior Legends in the finals next week.

Trident Senior Girls had a good game against Mount College girls but couldn't quite get the win going down by just 3 goals 30-36.

Trident Senior A boys will play their semi finals against the top ranked Mount College Prem Grey in Tauranga on Monday.

If you received a trophy/trophies at the Senior or Junior Prizegivings in 2020 could you please return them to the School Office as soon as possible.

Year 13 students needing help with university enrolments can see Ms Wildash in the Careers Hub or email her wildasha@trident.school.nz.

Year 11 and 12 students who are interested in Futures Academy for 2022, should put their name down in the Careers Hub or see Mrs Haines or Ms Wildash.

Students who have turned 18, may be eligible for a student allowance for the remainder of this year, please see Ms Wildash or Mrs McGowan in the Careers Hub for help with your application.

Spirit of Adventure Trust have an opportunity for a young person to join their 10-day development voyage. Due to the extension of the Auckland region Level 4 lockdown, the next voyage will now depart from Tauranga. They have some vacancies on this previously sold-out voyage, because the students from Auckland will no longer be able to join.

The voyage will depart on Monday 27 September and return on 7 October.

There is potential help with scholarships if required.

Trident High School has opted into the government’s Optional Donations Scheme in 2021-2022

Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
