Happy Easter and Happy Spring to our Elmdale Families,

I trust you all had a restful Spring Break and enjoyed some time as a family. Despite the unusual weather (snow and +20 degree temperatures in the same week?!?) you were able to spend time outdoors after a winter of being cooped up inside!

March was a fun month at Elmdale School! Jump Rope for Heart was a success and even though we couldn't have a school-wide jump-off, each class was able to participate during their Phys Ed classes. The last week of March was our annual spirit week - check out some pictures below!

Now that Spring Break has passed we are looking ahead to some spring planning here at Elmdale. We are working on a plan for Run, Jump and Throw day in a Covid-friendly style. We are also looking for local outdoor options for field trips. Already some of our classes have toured the neighborhood looking for learning opportunities right outside our own back yard.

Spring also brings the start of transition times. We are working on plans for grade 4 farewell and grade 5 orientation (stay tuned for more info!), as well as welcoming next year's kindergarten students to come and check out our school (more info to come on that as well).

Please ensure your child has a reusable water bottle at school every day. Our water fountains are turned off due to COVID restrictions, however we have water bottle fillers available for students to refill their bottles.

Should your child forget their bottle we may contact you to request one be brought to school. As the weather warms up it is very important that each child has a water bottle at school every day.

Please be prompt in picking up your children on time after school each day. We do not have an after-school program available, so when parents are late picking up their children this creates an inconvenience for us at the school.

Students are dismissed for pick-up starting at 3:45 after the buses leave. Parents will be contacted if students are not picked up by 3:55. Thank you for your cooperation with this.

We will soon be starting the process of creating class lists for the 2021-2022 school year. This is a very involved process and requires us to work closely as a school team to create class lists that are balanced and equitable for all. We take this process very seriously as we try very hard to create a positive learning environment for students.

We consider a variety of criteria when creating class lists, including:

• Achievement (balanced class composition)

• Social and behavioural considerations

• Male/Female ratio

• Group dynamics

• Learning styles

• Parent input

If a parent would like to make a specific request for a friend or teacher placement, please email Mr. Hiebert (vhiebert@hsd.ca) your request including a clear explanation of the academic and learning reasons for your request, by May 15, 2021. All requests submitted by that date will be considered based on their merit, however we cannot guarantee that all requests will be honoured. Late requests will not be considered.

Given appropriate support at home and at school, it has been our experience that the vast majority of placements are successful. Where a placement is proving to be difficult, we ask that parents and students give it the time required for friendships and classroom community building to develop.

Class placements will be included in your child's June report card. Early information about whether requests have or have not been granted will not be shared prior to June 30.

Just a reminder that Report Cards for grades 1-4 were distributed on March 19 on the Parent Portal. Please sign in to your Parent Portal Account to see your child's report card.

Please note that our Kindergarten registration for the fall will begin on February 15. To be eligible, Children must be five years of age on or before December 31, 2021 (born in 2016). The registration process will take place online at www.HSD.ca. If you do not have access to the Internet, please call the school office at 204-326-3325 and we can assist you in completing the registration over the phone. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to register their children soon after registration opens on February 15. Early registration will assist us in preparation and planning for the upcoming school year. We are working on plans for Kindergarten orientation activities which normally take place in Early May. Plans will be dependent on COVID restrictions - stay tuned for more information. As a school we raised $1118.00 for Jump Rope for Heart. Way to go Elmdale!!

We are excited to be kicking off our Spring Fundraiser selling Sunshine Greenhouse gift cards. We are so grateful for how well our Fall Fundraiser went selling Rocco’s Pizzas. Please help us make this fundraiser another huge success. We are going to be putting the money we raise towards phase one of our future play structure. Please see the fundraising form for a a picture of what could possibly be included in phase one. We would love to make this happen by summer of 2022.

All order forms and payment must be returned no later than Wednesday, April 21st to the

school. (Cheques payable to Elmdale Parent Council). To make this fundraiser a success, the top selling class will get a class party with Gelato from Sunshine Greenhouse.

We are excited to work together to make this fundraiser a success for our Elmdale students. If you would like to personally donate money to our future place structure or have a business that would like to donate, please email the Parent Council. Cheques for this would need to be

made out to Hanover School Division.

"Soup's On" provides daily school lunches to families in need. It can be started and stopped as needed. Contact our Learning Support Teacher Mrs. Tara Klassen (tklassen@hsd.ca) or your child's teacher via agenda book to register your child.

Please check our website for the bus pick up times and location near your house.
If your address has changed, please call transportation at 204-320-2347 to make sure that your children are riding the correct bus to and from school.
