UND NSPA Monthly Communiqué
May 2022 Issue 19
Congratulations Seniors
May marks the end of my 4th year in the role as fellowship coordinator. This means my work with a cohort of students I first met as freshman has come to an end. These wonderful students helped me gain confidence in my job by not only accepting my guidance in their applications for national scholarships, but also helping me promote national scholarship opportunities to their peers. They formed my first cohort of national scholarship peer advisors (NSPA) in 2019.
Happy graduation to Kincaid Rowbotham, Nathan Moe, Cale Gressman, and Austin Demolee. Their enthusiasm and hope sustained my work, especially during COVID19, as I continued to advise students, some of whom also graduate this May. Many happy regards to seniors Elisabeth Kolb, Briana Krupinsky, Vincent Ledvina, Merrick McMahon, Taylor Roehl, Mya Steinwehr (earning her MBA), Shealynn Wells, Claire Weltz, and Travis West!
Two of these seniors who deserve special acknowledgement are Elisabeth Kohl and Taylor Roehl, both going to apprentice in Germany next year. Elisabeth will be helping a classroom teacher teach English (ETA) in Bavaria, Germany this fall through the Fulbright U.S. Scholarship Program.Taylor, who also won the Fulbright ETA Germany Scholarship this year, will be headed to Germany through the CBYX scholarship to study and intern at a Germany university.
In this issue you will not only learn more about Taylor and Elisabeth, but also hear from Nathan Foster, 2021 Boren Scholar completing his senior year in Taiwan studying Chinese at National Chengchi University.
All students who apply for a national or international scholarship should be proud of the work they did to compile their application and how it prepared them for the adventures that await after UND. Congratulations seniors!

Two UND students win prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Germany Scholarships
The U.S. Department of State’s U.S. Student Fulbright Program is considered one of the most prestigious international exchange programs. Alumni have become heads of state, ambassadors, and CEOs. Their selection reflects a history of campus leadership and contribution to their community.
Elisabeth Kolb and Taylor Roehl were offered a fully funded opportunity to help German classroom teachers teach English. Taylor, however, declined this offer to accept the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program Young Professional Scholarship (CBYX) funded by the German Bundestag and U.S. Department of State. Taylor was named a CBYX Scholar in mid-March.
Elisabeth Kolb

An Interview with Nathan Foster, 2021 Boren Scholar
Despite setbacks due to COVID-19, Boren scholar Nathan Foster is finally studying Mandarin in Taiwan. "All the issues leading up to getting to go, the challenges, I've faced to get here, it teaches you a lot about yourself. You're forced to adapt and overcome," Foster said. "It changes you, and I'm definitely not the same person I was when I got on that flight."
Claire Weltz, NSPA student, interviews Nathan Foster and asks him about what drove him to apply, how he stood out in his application, and transitioning to life in Taiwan.
