2021-2022 Issue #10 December 13, 2021
Dear KAS Community,
As the semester ends, I want to send my warmest holiday wishes to each student, parent, and staff member. In these difficult times, it's important to thank one another early and often. Thank you for your support for our school and our programs. Thank you for the trust you have given me in my first few months as the Head of School.
Our students who are 12–17 are eligible for a BNT vaccination can receive their second dose on Friday, January 14, 2022. Our Nurse Shu-ping has been in touch with students and families. 98% of our eligible students received their first dose in October and we’re glad that we can keep on track for the second.
2021 has been a challenging year around the world. Taiwan has been sheltered from much of the turmoil that many countries and families have faced, but all of our lives have been affected, whether we know someone who’s suffered from COVID-19 or not. All of our regular patterns and our plans for the future have been disrupted. Many of our teachers will be leaving in June 2022, and that will create more challenges for the school community. We know that challenges also bring opportunities. The principals and I are excited about the hiring we’ve already been doing. There is much work to be done, but KAS is and will remain a strong school. Thank you for your support and trust.
The holiday season ahead will be a welcome break, even if our plans and activities are different than in the past, or in the way we had hoped they would be. I encourage everyone to enjoy some local activities and travel and to relax and refresh. Enjoy the holidays with friends and family, and come back on January 10 recharged for the second semester.
Best regards,
Mr. Laney, Head of School
Ms. Clark, High School Principal
Mr. Payne, Middle School Principal
Mr. Coyle, Elementary School Principal

Global Citizenship
At KAS, we talk with students about the many differences in people and the world. Some of the differences include beliefs, race, color, ethnicity, language, nationality, religion, gender, income, age, physical ability, mental ability, physical appearance, body shape, eye color and shape, hair color and texture, the sounds of your voice, talents, style, likes and dislikes.
Take some time to talk to your child about his/her unique qualities. Being different is a good thing and we appreciate differences. By having these discussions with your child you will help to build a level of appreciation and respect for others. We believe that understanding differences is an important part of being an empathetic understanding global citizen.
Take some time to discuss the following with your child:
Think about a classmate who is different from you, how can you get to know them better?
If you saw someone who seems lonely, how would you include them with you and your friends?
What is a problem you’ve had with another person recently and what did you do to be part of the solution?
If you saw someone being mistreated or excluded, how could you assertively speak out about it?
Has anyone ever made a decision about you just by looking at you? How did that make you feel?
What do you think the saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” means and why is this important?
What makes you special (unique talents, things that make you different from others)?
When your child talks to you about a conflict they are having, ask them to think about the other person’s feelings and point of view.
Our family does things a certain way because we feel it’s best for us. But other families do things differently and that is okay because it’s what is best for them.
Talk about an opposing view within your family and why it is necessary to respect individual differences.

Brogent Technologies
This past fall, the Brogent Technologies Marketing Team took three KAS students, Tribeca Kao ‘24, Darrin Lin ‘24, and Julie Lin ‘22 under their wing and guided them towards creating two promotional videos for their technology tourism product, the i-Ride. Our interns enlisted the help of Jonathan Hu ‘22 to star in their video. Please feel free to watch the video here (the video is in Chinese).

Winter Service Trip with V Taiwan 與 V Taiwan 合辦的寒假服務計畫
KAS and Volunteering Taiwan are working together again this winter! Around 10 KAS students, including mostly high school (9th ~ 12th grade) students and a few student-leaders from 8th grade, will be attending this four-day three-night trip to a district in Liouguei that was heavily affected by Typhoon Morakot a decade ago. Students will be working with senior citizens, renovating a recycling station, cleaning streets, experiencing tea farming and tea ceremonies, and engaging in reflective discussions led by V Taiwan.
As we head into the winter vacation, many of our seniors will be receiving notifications about their early action and early decision deadlines. This can be a time of excitement but also sometimes disappointment. Recently, contributor Brennan Barnard published an excellent article “Handling College Admission Decisions: A Sidecar Parent’s Guide” that offers advice from educators to students and families about how to approach the season of college decisions.
“We recommend that teens open emails from colleges in private rather than finding out in class in the middle of the school day or having a parent live stream it on social media. If the news is not good, your teen may need some support and time to grieve, and they will likely be watching your reaction as well. As a parent, consider going to a separate room from your teen after hearing the news, so you can celebrate or grieve alone and have a few moments to regulate your emotions.” - Denise Pope, Challenge Success, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Stanford Graduate School of Education.
As counselors we are here to celebrate and strategize at each and every step of the process. Please reach out to us if you’d like to discuss your results and enrollment plans.
During winter break, we also put together a suggested KAS Winter College Admissions Reading List for juniors and parents to get started on building a list of colleges and learning about recent admission trends. This list was emailed to you on Friday to introduce you to some new resources that may be of interest. Individual appointments with juniors are starting in January and advisory lessons with G9 and G10 will also be underway. Thank you for supporting your child to participate and take notes in these sessions.
We wish you a wonderful few weeks of rest and relaxation!
