Superintendent Update
From the Office of the Superintendent Dr. Christina Hinds
Friday, September 25, 2020
Dear Wayland Union Schools Parents and Students:
As we conclude our fifth week of school, I am providing an update to our COVID-19 Preparedness Plan and our newly developed Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan (ECOL).
In August, all school districts were required to submit a COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan to address their instructional model and safety protocols aligned with the MI Safe Schools Roadmap available at: https://www.michigan.gov/documents/whitmer/MI_Safe_Schools_Roadmap_FINAL_695392_7.pdf. Our COVID-19 Plan is located under the COVID-19 section on our district website.
Recently, all local school districts were required to submit an Extended COVID-19 Learning Plan (ECOL) outlining student growth goals and our plan for progress monitoring. The ECOL Plan has been submitted and approved by AAESA. This plan is posted to our district website, located on the COVID-19 section.
Moving forward, after districts' ECOL Plans are approved, local School Boards will need to reconfirm the COVID-19 Preparedness and Response Plan, including the instructional delivery model, every 30 days. This will be a standing agenda item on each WUS School Board meeting in the coming months. One meeting will be discussion and the following meeting will be for action (reconfirmation). Please find the reporting timeline and information related to the ECOL pictured below this article. The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) has recently released indicators and thresholds for risk of transmission of COVID-19 in schools. This document is available at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/downloads/community/schools-childcare/indicators-thresholds-table.pdf. Next week, the Allegan County Health Department (ACHD) plans to release data based on local school district risk for COVID-19 transmission. Until then you may view Allegan County data at the MI Safe Start Map at https://www.mistartmap.info. These data pieces will be reviewed by the Board of Education each month when confirming the COVID-19 Preparedness and ECOL Plans.
In closing, we will continue to keep the health and safety of our staff and students at the forefront of our minds. We appreciate the many people who have provided feedback about their experiences, both positive and negative, with the hybrid model. The Board of Education, District Administration, Teachers, Staff, and I look forward to the day when we are back to school post-pandemic! Please remember to be compassionate to those around you. Everyone carries struggles due to the pandemic which may not be visible to those around them. Together, we will persevere. We are Wayland UNION Schools.
In partnership,
Dr. Christina M. Hinds
