Beacon Bulletin
Week of November 27th- December 1st
Important PPES Information:
Piney Point families,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break! In the next 15 days we have many exciting activities happening in our school. We will be having our first hole school assembly to celebrate great beacon behavior, the holiday shop will be opening soon and our music department will be sharing the sounds of the season with winter concerts. As you can see there is a lot happening at PPES. Just a reminder since fall/winter has finally come to southern Maryland, be sure to wear your coats and gloves. We have outdoor recess unless the weather does not permit it. Unfortunately, we do not have a place for children who are not dressed appropriately to stay inside. I suggest that you have a spare hoodie in your locker for such occasions. Don't forget to write your child's name in their coat. Our Lost and Found is starting to fill up with some "ownerless" coats. Please have your child check in the cafeteria if they have misplaced their coat.
Piney Point Community- we are looking to help families in need. Please take a moment to look at the information from our counselor, Ms. Pelton, on how we can support our families.
Our PPES Ornaments have arrived. We will have some available for purchase at the winter Paint Night as well Cookies with Santa and using the order form below. The goal is to have a new design every year and make them a collectable.
The SMCPS Calendar Committee is seeking input in the development of the 2024-2025 school year calendar. Please respond to this Calendar Survey to provide your input.
Be sure to review this entire newsletter each week as it will provide you with valuable resources and information. This information current up until Thanksgiving break!

Parent Cheat Sheets for Math
Math Night
Thank you to all who were able to attend our Math Night sponsored by Mathnasium - The Math Learning Center. Here are a few games that you can try at home.
Sum Up
Items needed: a deck of cards and a 1 minute timer.
Using a shuffled card deck, start a 1 minute timer and have students add values of cards in a continuous sum. For example, if you turn over a 2, your student would say 2. If the next card is 8, the student would then say 10. Have them try and create the greatest sum they can in 1-minute using mental math.
Addition Heads-Up (for 3 players)
All you need is a deck of cards. Without looking at the value of the cards, two players draw a card from the deck and hold it number side out on their forehead. Each player then looks at the card on the other player's head. The third player, or facilitator, announces the sum of the two cards. The first player to figure out the value of the card on their own head wins. Play five rounds to determine a winner.
Blink!
Looking for a great stocking stuffer for your student. Check out Blink! This was a very popular game at our Mathnasium event. This lightning fast game involves 2 players trying to match the shape, count, or color on their cards to either one of two discard piles. These cards are available through Amazon or Walmart.

Reading Information:
Research has shown us the important role families play in helping children learn to read and write. The most important thing you can do is to read with your child every day.
Below are some additional tips to help support reading at home, as well as grade level newsletters for our reading curriculum programs.
Phonics Practice making connections between sounds and letters.
Point out words that begin with the same letter as your child's name (for example, John and jump). Talk about how the beginning sounds of the words are alike.
Vocabulary & Comprehension
Sort and Group Objects. By putting objects in groups, children can learn new words that label the category. You also can discuss the ways in which items in the groups are similar or different. Toys are great for sorting and grouping.
Fluency
Read a variety of books on one topic. This will help your child become more familiar with vocabulary related to a topic of interest and provide multiple opportunities to re-read familiar, high-interest vocabulary and ideas.
Benchmark Advance Home Connection Newsletters - Unit 2
Grades K-3 use Fundations for phonics instruction and word study instead of the Benchmark Advance materials. For phonics and word study, please use the Fundations newsletter linked below instead of the phonics information in the Benchmark Advanced newsletters.

Notes From the Nurse
What Do You Do If Your Student Is Ill?
While school attendance is vital to your student’s education, a sick child belongs at home. Please review the Sick Day Guidelines below to assist you in making that decision
KEEP ME HOME IF...
- I have a temperature higher than 100°F.
- I'm throwing up or have diarrhea.
- My eyes are pink and crusty.
SEND ME BACK TO SCHOOL WHEN...
My symptoms have significantly improved or resolved.
I haven't had a fever or fever-reducing medication for 24 hours.
I haven't thrown up, had diarrhea or had medications to control these symptoms for 24 hours.
If antibiotics have been prescribed, I have been taking them for at least 24 hours.
CALL THE DOCTOR IF...
I’ve had a temperature higher than 100°F for more than 2 days.
I've been throwing up or having diarrhea for more than 2 days.
I've had cold symptoms for more than a week and they aren't getting any better.
I still have asthma symptoms after using my asthma medicine (and call 911 if I'm having trouble breathing after using an inhaler).
KEEPING YOUR STUDENT WELL
Hand washing is the number one way to stop the spread of disease. Twenty seconds of soap and water scrubbing before meals and after bathroom breaks is a great way to start this healthy habit. Encourage this practice at home.
Ensure adequate exercise and rest periods.
Provide proper nutrition, including a good breakfast.
Encourage good daily hygiene, including brushing teeth.
Review the rules of safe play.
Transportation Information:
Please click the link below for information regarding your child's bus number, bus stop location, and pick-up and drop-off times. If you have specific questions regarding bus transportation, please call the Department of Transportation at (301)-475-4256.
For all parents of PreKindergarten and Kindergarten students: An adult must be present at the bus stop when students are being picked up or dropped off. If an adult associated with a PreKindergarten or Kindergarten student is not present at the bus stop at the end of the school day, the bus driver will return the student to the school and the parents will be contacted to come to the school to pick up the student.
Home Access Center (HAC)
HAC for the 2023-2024 school year will be active for parents at 5:00 pm on August 18th. Please contact the front office if you need assistance accessing your HAC account.
