Jackie Robinson Academy Weekly Newsletter 2/3/24
Dear JROB Families!
February is a jam packed month with Black History Month, Lunar New Year, the 100th day of school (February 9th), Valentine’s Day, two Monday holidays, and the start of Semester 2! It can feel like a lot but thinking about it in terms of teaching and learning there are a lot of intersections that help make it all come together. For Black History Month, please join me in celebrating Black History month by showcasing the young people that are making history now. What comes to mind are the student leaders, parent leaders, teacher leaders, and community leaders that are making a difference in our children's lives in our JROB and LBUSD community. Come meet some of them at the Black Student Achievement Symposium this Saturday at Jordan High School.
Changing the narrative while honoring the trailblazers that challenged the status quo, Black History Month is an opportunity to look at how opportunity, innovation, leadership, courage, and perseverance can shape history. These values intersect with our focus on a new semester and new schedule for our middle school students. As we apply what we learned in semester 1, how can we encourage our students to think outside the box and develop projects that engage their creativity, critical thinking, and presentation/problem-solving skills.
Valentine’s Day is one of the most exciting days in elementary school. This year we continue the spirit of kindness by focusing our efforts on celebrating friendship, kindness, and courage. We also have our Elementary Sweetheart Dance and Middle School Winter Formal this month:
Thursday, February 15th - Elementary Sweetheart Dance 1:40-3:00
Friday, February 16th - Winter Formal 4:00-6:00
With multiple celebrations this month, we have the opportunity to look at events, past and present, through different lenses and help our students develop a richer understanding of history and the points of view that are different than their own.
With Dolphin Pride,
Principal Ngo
