Happy Halloween Eagles!
Halloween is tomorrow and students are encouraged to show their halloween spirit. Costumes are allowed but they should follow these guidelines:
Be appropriate for school
Follow the dress code
No crowns
No look-a-like weapons no matter how fake they look
No face paint
No masks
No hoods
No spikes or anything that may harm someone
No large costume that may impede vision, or interrupt the learning of someone else
All Leyden students qualify for free breakfast and lunch
All students, regardless of family income, will receive free breakfast and lunch while at school. This is an extension of the National School Breakfast/Lunch Program and the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) that Leyden High School has qualified for.
Leyden hosts session about planning and paying for college
Leyden’s Student Services Departments will host a special session to help parents plan and pay for college, on November 7, at 6:30 p.m. at East Leyden High School. This session is open to all Leyden families and will provide valuable information on financial aid, college financing, and the application process.
English presentations will be held in the Cafeteria and Spanish presentations will be held in the Auditorium. The program will conclude at 7:30 p.m. and representatives will be available to answer questions following the presentation.
Leyden hosts Veterans Day Ceremony
Leyden will be hosting the Annual Veterans Day Ceremony, Celebration of our Hometown Heroes” on Thursday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the East Leyden Auditorium. This free musical event will honor Veterans, First Responders and Health Care workers.
Leyden hosts a series of “Future Focus” events
In support of our commitment to students’ postsecondary readiness, as well as Student Services’ goal that every senior graduate with a plan in place, we are excited to announce the return of Future Focus - a time when we come together as a community to highlight postsecondary pathways.
Future Focus is a series of events that the team at Leyden created as a way to highlight many of the options available to students after high school. These post secondary pathways are broken down into four main categories: Military, Triton College (two-year colleges), the Trades, and Four-Year College. Each of the pathways will receive one dedicated week during the school year where students will learn about the options and engage in activities that further help them prepare for their futures.
Future Focus Weeks Schedule:
Military Week: November 6 - November 10
Triton College Week: December 4 - December 8
Skilled Trades & Careers Week: February 20 - February 23
4-year Colleges and Universities Week: March 11 - March 15
Movie Night at East Leyden
Alianza Latina and Sharing the Dream Club are hosting their annual movie night to celebrate Dia De Muertos on Thursday, November 2, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the East Leyden student cafeteria. The night will include The Book of Life movie, food, drinks and crafts. Entry to the movie will be on the Calwagner side of the building, Entrance 18. Bring the family out for a fun night!

Student earn College and Career Pathway Endorsement
Similar to the Seal of Biliteracy, students can earn a state seal on their transcript for the designation of college and career-ready. Leyden has eight approved pathways over four Career clusters: Education, Early Childhood Education, Culinary, Engineering, Nursing Assisting, Computer Science, Computer Programming, and Computer Systems Networking.
Statewide, only 1,072 endorsements were issued during the 2023 school year. In this year’s senior class, 81 students earned those endorsements!
Six Leyden Students selected for All-State Showchoir
Six Leyden student musicians, five showchoir and one band student were selected to participate in the 2023 Illinois American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) All-State Showchoir. Athiana Moran, Sonya Morales, Nathan Pera, Claudine Ricana, and Sabrina Wasilewsi have earned this recognition, placing them in the top 50 scoring singers in the state. Additionally, Emilie Gutierrez was nominated to play tenor saxophone with the student musicians who accompany the All-State Showchoir.

Superintendent recognized as a Loyola Distinguished Alumni
Our very own Superintendent, Dr. Nick Polyak, has been named a 2023 Distinguished Alumni for Loyola’s School of Education in the category of Administration and Supervision. Each year, Loyola School of Education hosts the annual Distinguished Alumni Awards, bringing forth examples of individuals who live into the Jesuit ideal of being a person for others. This annual event recognizes the contributions and success of our distinguished and dedicated alumni. The School of Education has a long tradition of honoring our graduates who are achieving remarkable success in addressing social inequalities in both their local and global communities.
