Principal's Message
Dear Angell Community,
It is always fun to feature exciting learning opportunities and to catch our students in action. As a district we have been working hard to support our staff to support core content in all academic areas. The pictures below are a great example of collaboration between our 2nd grade team, technology services, our teaching and learning team and our math coach to present an engaging lesson integrating the use of technology to enhance the measuring skills students are working on in class. The excitement, engagement and productive talk was outstanding.
Later this month we will celebrate the Lunar New Year. For those who may not know about the Lunar New Year here is a little information from kids-world-travel-guide.com:
This new year celebration is also called Lunar New Year and celebrated also as Spring Festival. It is celebrated in January or February in many countries around the world, especially in countries with larger Asian communities. This year the Lunar New Year is celebrated on February 10th.
Happy Chinese New Year - Gong Xi Fa Cai
Many countries celebrate the new year according to the Chinese Calendar and not only to our calendar which is the Gregorian calendar starting on the 1st of January. Lunar New Year is an important public holiday for many countries including China, South Korea, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. In many other countries, Chinese communities celebrate in the city's 'Chinatown' districts.
In some countries the festivities for the Lunar New Year also might have special names, such as Tet is the name for the Vietnamese celebrations.
What is Chinese New Year?
This important date on the Chinese calendar has been celebrated for many centuries. During the festivities ancestors are honoured and traditional ceremonies are held where people get together and welcome the new year with customs that shall bring good luck, good fortune, wealth, prosperity and happiness.
The spring festival festivities for the new year take 15 days in most countries. The new year is often celebrated with dragon dances, lion dances, gift exchanging and fireworks. It ends typically with lantern festivals on the 15th day of the first calendar month. See below an image from the Pingxi Sky Festival which is celebrated in Taiwan every year to end the new year's festivities.
To all of our Angell families that celebrate the Lunar New Year we wish you a Happy New Year!
Right around the corner is Valentine's Day. Classroom teachers will share their celebration plans with individual classes. A kind reminder that all celebrations during the school day are food free. We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to a fun day on February 14th.

Angell Elementary School of Excellence Focus Group Interest Form
The Angell Elementary School PTA knows that a strong partnership among our families, school leaders and community members is important to the success of our students and school. That’s why we are participating in the National PTA School of Excellence program, which grows partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being of all students.
We need your help! As part of the process outlined by National PTA, we are in the early stages of our goal for this school year. We plan to add an additional piece of equipment to our playground.
If you or your Angell student would like to participate in our focus group that will aid in determining what type of equipment we purchase, please fill out the following form. This focus group will likely take place before our February PTA meeting at 6 pm. If we have a large number of students interested, their meeting will take place during the school day.
Does this sound like a PTA program you’d really like to help with? Join us! Our next meeting is February 6th at 7 pm in the Angell Media Center. You can also email us at angellberkleypta@gmail.com with questions or concerns.
Thank you for your continued support and collaboration as we work toward becoming a National PTA School of Excellence!

Cold Weather Notice
As we enter into winter months we will experience some colder weather which will impact our students. We will invite students inside for an inside line-up no earlier than 7:45 am whenever the temperature is 9 degrees or less with the windchill. We have an organized system that allows students to line up in the hallways. However, if the weather is above 9 degrees (factoring in the windchill) we will have students wait outdoors each morning and go outside for recess each day. Please have your children dress appropriately for the weather in the event we do remain outside. Proper winter attire may include winter coats, gloves, hats, snow pants and boots. Although we have some extras in the office we do not have enough to outfit each child.
If you need any assistance with winter clothing please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly as we are fortunate to have anonymous donors who have provided funds and winter clothing to help our Angell families during the winter months.
