Student Achievement
Slaybaugh Primary Preschool classes had a wonderful morning and afternoon getting to walk down to the District office and put ornaments on their Christmas tree and sing songs today.
Art, math and science have such a close relationship, and that was proven in a big way with Mrs. Pfaeffli's Cyanotype Snowflake art lesson. Students learned about a chemical reaction process with UV rays from the sun called, Cyanotype. It was invented in the 1800s and later used to make Blue Prints! Students cut snowflakes, gave their cyanotype papers a "sun tan," and then rinsed their papers in water to "stop" the UV exposure process. This involved, yet simple project allowed for immediate results- a first grader's dream! Final product was on display for Mrs. Fogelman's First Grade Winter Concerts.
Mrs. Buganski's class and the kids from the Silver Team rocked the holiday concert on Wednesday! Spreading cheer from ear to ear!
This is Computer Science Week and the Hour of Code so Ms. Toth's students around the world are learning about computer science and how computers work. The students in Mrs. Straup’s class on the carpet were learning about a computer code having an error, or “bug”, that they needed to find and correct or “debug” before the “robot” could complete the algorithm and walk correctly along the path.
Here are both of Ms. Toth's classes taking part in Hour of Code online activities on the Code.org website. Computer Science week and The Hour of Code are always in December but many schools continue learning about computer programming and coding throughout the entire school year because it is such an important skill for their future that involves not only problem solving, logic and creativity but also growth mindset and perseverance. It is always a fun and engaging experience for all
Our 2nd students are working hard getting ready for their winter concerts!

With the visit from Santa and Dietz the therapy dog, Ms. Barnes Kindergarten students used their experiences as ideas to write about during Writer's Workshop!
Ms. Straup's 1st grade class made snowman glyphs and went into the hall to analyze their data!
Ms. Huba's 2nd grade class had the privilege of learning all about Sinterklaas on Friday, December 6. Her student Quinne's father is from Holland! Sinterklass or Sint-Nicolaas is a legendary figure based on Saint Nicholas, patron saint of children is celebrated every year on December 6. She described how her family leaves their shoes in front of the fireplace overnight and wakes to find them full of treats. Quinne also brought in several different chocolates wrapped like Euros for us to see.
Sneaky, our character elf, jumped REALLY HIGH and got stuck on our Slaybaugh Elementary family board in the main office on Monday!
Looks like Sneaky the Elf went zip lining through our halls!
This afternoon our faculty meeting involved a fun winter STEM challenge. The teams were given toothpicks and gumdrops and asked to create a free standing Christmas tree. The tree must be able to stand on its own. Congratulations to our winners! Their tree was 31.5” tall. The winners will have a special lunch courtesy of our Slaybaugh Renaissance Team from Pete’s Subs.
Our Second grade monopoly bucks winners have finished their pizza lunch and are now playing our giant Connect 4!
