What Will School Look Like
Mason Middle School
When Students Return to Face-To-Face Instruction
Screening: We will ask for parents to screen all students before having them attend school. Students with fevers or other COVID-19 symptoms will be sent home. You can access the COVID-19 Student Screener here.
Masks: Students are expected to bring their own masks. Replacement KN95 masks will be made available if a student arrives without a mask or the mask isn't fitting properly. Double layer face masks, without holes, need to cover the student’s nose and mouth. Repeated arrival without a mask may result in the student not being allowed on the bus or in a school building.
Single layer gaiter style face coverings are not sufficient for wearing during the school day. Students wearing these style masks will be asked to put on a KN95.
Large Gatherings/Trips: There will be no large gatherings with students from more than one class. School-wide assemblies and performances will not be held.
Guests, visitors, volunteers: Visitor access will be restricted. All meetings related to special education and Section 504 will be done virtually as much as possible. Exceptional circumstances will need to be discussed with the building administrator prior to any in-person meetings or visits to the school. Participation of outside agencies at school meetings will be done on a virtual platform. District staff that work across buildings will be encouraged to hold meetings and solve problems remotely.
A typical day
Face Coverings/Sanitizer
○ Masks will be worn by staff and students at all times, except during these times:
- During lunch, students can remove their mask for the duration of their eating time. Their masks should be replaced immediately following their eating time.
- During breakfast and when students need a drink or snack, they may briefly pull down their mask to take a drink or eat. Their masks should be replaced immediately.
○ If a student needs a mask break, he or she should request to go to Student Services for a break.
○ Hand sanitizer stations are located throughout the building and near entrances and exits. Each teacher classroom has hand sanitizer available for student use.
Daily Schedule
○ 4 day In-Person students will be on campus Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. All students will have an afternoon 1/2 day schedule of remote learning on Wednesdays.
○ While on campus, students will attend classes, eat lunch, and pass in the hallway according to their schedule in Skyward and following social distancing guidelines.
○ There will be six periods per day. For seventh and eighth grade students, this will be social studies, science, math, language arts, and two electives. Sixth grade students only have one elective.
Lockers/ Shared Materials
○ All students during In-Person learning will carry backpacks from class to class with
their belongings. They will not have access to a locker.
○ As much as possible, materials will not be shared among students. If this is unavoidable then gloves will be used and materials will be disinfected or discarded.
Breakfast
○ All students are offered free breakfast and can pick up a breakfast as they enter the building.
○ Students that choose to take a breakfast will be asked to eat their breakfast in the cafeteria prior to 1st hour.
○ During breakfast and when students need a drink or snack, they may briefly pull down their mask to take a drink or eat. Their masks should be replaced immediately.
Lunch
○ Students will eat lunch in one of the two cafeterias, library, or Room 22 (large group instruction room). Additionally, outdoor seating will be made available when weather permits.
○ Students will select a permanent seat during their first lunch of the 3rd Trimester.
○ Students will have one hot lunch choice and will not need to enter their pin. There will be no a-la-carte or other lunch lines. The lunch menu can be found here.
○ Lunch period is 30 minutes long. During this timeframe, students may eat and go outside for activity.
○ During lunch, students can remove their mask for the duration of their eating time. Their masks should be replaced immediately following their eating time.
○ Cafeteria staff will be implementing district approved sanitation between lunch periods.
○ Seating will be set up so that students are socially distanced insofar as possible.
○ Microwaves will be available for student use.
○ The teachers’ lounge will be closed except for storing refrigerated items and heating up items in the microwave. Teachers must wear masks and practice social distancing when gathering items from the lounge but may not eat in the lounge.
Hallways/Passing Times
○ All students will walk on the right side of the hallway. Tape has been placed in hallways with arrows to help students maintain social distance while correctly navigating the hallways.
○ Students will travel directly to their next class during passing times. Lingering in the hallway will be discouraged to help maintain social distancing.
Elective Classes
○ Students in elective classes will receive individual materials as needed. Please look for information from the school regarding upcoming distribution events.
○ PE students will not have access to the locker rooms. Students should come to school dressed in comfortable clothing and wear/bring tennis shoes.
○ Sixth graders will maintain an Even/Odd schedule (see calendar here)
Clubs & Activities
○ Middle school sports will follow the guidelines and protocols from the MHSAA.
○ All other clubs/activities will be held in a manner aligned with current MDHHS/CDC recommendations.
Sick Students
○ Any student that displays COVID-19 symptoms will be isolated, monitored, and parent pick-up will be arranged.
○ Other sick students will be treated with caution, practicing social distancing, and
cleaning protocols.
Entry/Exit
○ Students will enter and exit through a door designated for their drop off location (see map).
○ Hand sanitizer will be available upon entry.
○ Students will be socially distanced when waiting to enter the building until 7:25 a.m. Specific markers will be set up outside for students to promote social distancing.
○ Doors will not open until 7:25 a.m. To assist in the management of social distancing, we are encouraging all families to wait until 7:25 a.m. to arrive on campus.
○ Upon entry, students will travel directly to their first hour class. Lingering in the hallway will be discouraged to help maintain social distancing.
○ At dismissal, students will travel directly to their designated exit. Lingering in the hallway will be discouraged to help maintain social distancing.
○ To assist in the management of social distancing and cleaning, students will not be able to stay in the building after dismissal. We are encouraging all families to be present at 2:35 p.m. to pick up their student(s).
Restrooms
○ Students will be asked to use the restroom facilities during class. This will decrease the number of students using a facility at one time.
○ Restrooms will be cleaned using the district approved cleaning protocols.
Parents
○ Parents and volunteers will be prohibited in the building except in emergency circumstances. There will be safe procedures for dropping off materials and picking up students that do not require access to the building.

What to bring to school each day
- Chromebook (fully charged each day)
- Charger
- Earbuds or headphones
- Backpack
- Textbooks/workbooks
- Mask
- An extra mask just in case
- Water bottle
- Snacks (in case they have a late lunch period)
- Pens, pencils, notebooks, and any other materials they need for classes in a backpack that they will keep with them throughout the day
- A copy of their schedule from Skyward or a way to access it (cell phone or other device)
