Our Dragons are Exceptional!
9th grader Sicily has spent her free time competed all season in riding competitions in IEA Zone 1 Region 10 on the Flats to earn enough points to qualify for Regionals. This year out of hundreds of riders Sicily was one of only 5 qualifying riders in northern CT, Western CT and Berkshire county to make it to Regionals, and the only one to qualify by obtaining a First Place victory.
On December 10th 2022 Sicily competed against those riders in Regionals at Stoneleigh-Burnham Equestrian Center in Massachusetts. Only First Place would move on to Zones. Sicily riding so beautifully and confidently on a horse name Donny Walburg (HAHA), whom until her one 5 minute warmup opportunity Sicily had never met, placed 1st earning her a spot Zones.
Sicily will now continue to perfect her craft until 4/1/2023 were she will compete against the other Zone 1 top riders from all 10 Regions at the Eastern States Exposition in the Coliseum. These 10 riders will come from every state in New England and compete to go to Nationals.
COACH'S CORNER
December has come in with a huge change in temperature and the PE Staff have been changing with the times. The first rotation has ended has ended for our middle school, where they enjoyed and excelled in the CT. State Physical Fitness Test, Volleyball, Speedball, Throwing and Catching and Flag Football. The students learned skills that they can carry for a lifetime including; bumping and setting a volleyball, throwing a football, commitment, responsibility, and also learned valuable lessons in cooperating and learning to work as a member of a team. We had many outstanding individual performances as well, with students showing great effort in the state fitness test, and some even earning the Presidential Patch for performing over and above state averages.
In the high school first semester, students have been introduced to the fitness center and the many machines. They have been guided by staff in proper form and the correct number of repetitions to make their bodies strong and healthy. This is a great opportunity to learn a lifetime skill that will help protect them against disease and loss of flexibility. Students have also enjoyed games such as volleyball and cooperative games, and our newest addition to the 10th grade, Paddleball. The students have been committed to trying new things and learning new skills.
As we go into winter, remember to bundle up when you exercise outside and dress in layers to keep warm. The PE staff will continue to help students realize their potential, and show them exercises that they can do at home for a lifetime of health and well-being. Remember, you must challenge yourself to create change, and the PE staff looks forward to creating new challenges in the months ahead.

Flu Season is Here!
The School-Based Health Clinic (SBHC) will be offering flu vaccines to students enrolled in the clinic. Please complete the vaccine consent form and return it to the health office if you are interested in your student receiving the vaccine here at AIS.
GET YOUR FLU VACCINE AT AIS SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CLINIC!
The “Flu” also known as “Influenza”, is a very contagious virus. It is spread when you either breathe infected droplets in the air (from a cough or sneeze) or touching something infected with the virus—a pen, table, spoon, etc. The virus may live up to 8 hours on an object!
Flu Symptoms are more severe than the common cold and include:
· Fever up to 104 degrees
· Chills and shakes with the fever
· Extreme tiredness
· Headaches and body aches
· Dry hacking cough
· Sore throat
· Vomiting and belly pain
Hand washing is very important in preventing the spread of germs. Also staying healthy by eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and getting a good night’s sleep will assist in preventing the spread of germs and the virus.
The NUMBER ONE way to prevent the virus is to get the annual Flu Vaccine. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends all people over the age of 6 months get one yearly in the fall.
The SBHC (School Based Health Center) is offering the Flu Vaccine to all students who are currently enrolled in the SBHC:
· If your child is enrolled and you would like them to receive the flu vaccination, review the included consent form. Please complete, check-off, and sign ALL areas of the form and return to the SBHC (Nurse’s Office). Please understand that without the proper consent, your child cannot receive the vaccination.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 860-242-7834 x2315.
Thank you.
Josiane Alexandre, APRN
