FROM THE DESK OF....
Career Pathways Coordinator, Melissa McLean-
District 622 believes that the important work of career development can shift the mindset of students from simply 'planning to graduate' to 'graduating with a plan'. Through self-discovery, career exploration and engagement, students are empowered to imagine and identify new careers that they were not previously considering. Industry professionals who share their authentic, relevant stories humanize careers and pathways for students. Check out these students who are engaging in career exploration through informational interviews and job shadows.

Careers in HUMAN SERVICES
INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEW
Angelina shared, "By visiting with these therapists, I learned about the differences between careers in psychology and social work. I also learned that oftentimes, psychologists and therapists work together. Doing the informational interviews was really helpful in understanding the differences and similarities in the roles of mental health professionals. This Spring, I am enrolled in the Abnormal Psychology class at Tartan, and have registered for additional courses relevant to this career area for next year."
Careers in EDUCATION
From Director, Stacie Penn-
"Carol Matheys Center for Children and Families is excited to continue our partnership with Tartan High School to provide paid internships for students who are interested in Early Childhood Education careers. These internships provide students an opportunity to gain hands on experience working with young children in a high quality preschool classroom.
Jade (Gr. 12) began her internship with us in November. She greets children and parents at drop off time, and helps the children transition into the morning routine. She helps the classroom teacher with getting children breakfast, supervising play and helping children with positive interactions with their peers. The children love seeing Jade in the morning. She always has a smile for them and truly enjoys her time with them. Jade also does art, reads to the kids, plays dramatic play with them and plays outside with them."
This is the second student placement for Tartan. 2022 Alumni, Alexia S. began working at Carol Mathey's last year and is still there part-time while she pursues her degree at Century College.
Careers in HEALTHCARE
Chalee (Gr. 12) spent a morning during winter break at Oakdale Family Dentistry learning about dental careers. Engaging in career exploration through job shadows and informational interviews is a great way for students to learn more about who they are and how they want to show up and contribute in the world.
On January 12th, more than 60 Tartan sophomores and juniors spent a morning at 916 Career & Tech Center to explore the 20 hands-on programs that give HS students a competitive advantage of professional skills, industry certifications and college credit. In addition to the benefits offered through these classes, students also earn six elective credits through Tartan. Learn more about how Tartan partners with 916 Career & Tech.
