Dear Parents and Staff

Notre Dame Catholic Primary School, as it operates currently, was established in 2010 on two separate sites, and opened in its current format in 2011. Whilst this is a relatively short length of time, our history extends much further, beginning with the opening of Holy Name School in Carlisle in 1938 and the commencement of the original Notre Dame School on the current site in 1960. Without the vision and foresight of the Mercy Sisters at Holy Name and the Presentation Sisters at Cloverdale, the wonderful school that we have today would not exist. Our Leadership Team, under the direction of Mrs Stefanie Bradshaw, has been working on a project for the past twelve months to recognise the dedication and work of both of these Orders of Sisters from their earliest beginnings, and the brass Lantern, Basket and plaques that have been secured in and around the Mother Mary Piazza are the result. The Lantern serves to remind us that the Presentation Sisters in the very early days in Cork, Ireland, would use these to light their way as they ventured into the slums to assist the poor. The Basket was used by the Mercy Sisters to carry the things they needed to minister to the poor in the back streets of Dublin. Each plaque has a QR Code embedded into it that will take the reader to relevant information. The first plaque, set into the paving outside the Library tells us about Charism and the value of the journey with the plaques on each side of the Piazza leading us to information about the Foundresses, the Sisters worldwide, in Australia, Western Australia and then at each of our foundation schools before coming together with our Notre Dame Catholic School story embedded in the plaque set in the paving under the school crest and logo near the lift. We will be holding the Blessing of the Charism Journey at 9.00am on Tuesday 2 November and hope that this will become a resource that will be an enduring reminder of both our past history and our Mission for the future.

MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

Thank you to the members of the Wellness committee who organised such a great range of resources and activities to engage us all throughout last week and to remind us of the need to care for ourselves. The chalk quotes on the paving and the post-it notes put up around the school by our Year Sixes were great reminders of this and the lunchtime meditation, games and dance sessions created such positivity for us all. The staff were treated to a Cabernet and Canvas art session lead by our very talented Art Specialist, Annette Flexman, after school on Friday with a number of staff allowing their inner artist to shine through.

Our Mental Health Banner which was produced by all of the classes throughout last week is now on display near the Mother Mary Piazza.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS

Although there have only been a few opportunities to prepare for these Carnivals, I am confident our athletes will make us all proud of their performances at both the Field and Track Carnivals next Monday and Tuesday respectively. I look forward to joining with parents at both Carnivals to cheer them all on to achieve their best.

OPEN AFTERNOON AND ART EXHIBITION

From 3.30 to 5.30pm on Tuesday 2 November parents are invited to join with their children to visit classes to see the great work that the children have been doing throughout the year. An exhibition of the artwork that was created by the children throughout the last two school Terms will also be held so I encourage parents to come along and enjoy.

Planned Giving Envelopes 2021 – 2022 Financial Year

The envelopes are available from the School side entrance of the Church. Please take the same number as last year and tick your name off. If you are taking a set for the first time, please write your name and contact details next to the number that you are taking. Direct Debit forms are also available. Offertory and Collections

During the past three weeks, the Church has re-introduced the Offertory procession as part of Mass. In addition, the collection baskets are now being passed around the pews.

Cultural Diversity Mass

Mass will be celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth on Sunday 24 October 2021. Dress in your cultural or national dress and enjoy the Mass with family and friends. Melbourne Cup Luncheon

The Parish will hold its annual Melbourne Cup Luncheon on 2 November 2021 in the Parish Centre. Doors will open at 10.00 am and tickets are $10.00 per person and available at the door. Sweeps and raffles will be available. Please bring a plate of savoury or sweet to share. Tea and coffee available.

November Memorial Masses

Masses will be celebrated on the weekend 6 and 7 November 2021 for all those who passed away in the previous 12 months (November 2020 – November 2021). Lists will be placed at both entrances of the Church to record deceased relatives. Please place names on the list by Wednesday 27 October 2021. The following letter was sent to the City of Belmont Rangers' Office on behalf of the School Advisory Council last term. As we begin a new term, it is a timely reminder to all parents and caregivers that the safety of our students is paramount. Whilst parking can be difficult before and after school around our perimeter, I would like to encourage the use of the drive through drop off and pick up system and remind families that there is additional parking available at Miles Park. In addition to these options the parking on Daly Street does clear by 3:10pm, arriving at school 5 minutes after the end of the school day may also be an option for some families.

Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing to you on behalf of the School Advisory Council of Notre Dame Catholic Primary School located at 360 Daly Street in Cloverdale. We have written this letter as we are concerned with the dangerous traffic around our school grounds.

Our school is surrounded by four streets being Daly Street, Oswell Street, Gilroy Street, and Wright Street. Please refer to the map below.

In the last year we have noticed that a number of parents have been engaging in unsafe drop-off practices before school. Some of these include:

• Pulling over on the residential side of Oswell Street or Daly Street and students running out from behind their parents’ vehicles. On some of these occasions people driving past the school have had to brake so as not to hit a child who did not look as they ran across the road.
• Pulling over on Oswell Street or Daly Street on the side of the street closest to the school and students jumping out of the cars. We consider this dangerous too as not only do the cars bank up behind the car pulling over but on a number of occasions, drivers have tried to speed past the banked-up cars on the opposite side of the road.
• Parking illegally on Oswell Street, between Daly and Gillroy Streets, and leaving the car with hazard indicators flashing whilst they run inside to drop their children off.

We bring to your attention that we have directed parents to either park in our school car bays or drive into Gilroy Street and drop school children off via our supervised ‘drive-through’. However, there are some parents who are not listening.

We would very much appreciate your assistance on this matter as we seek to create safe traffic practices around our school.

The Year Four students had a supercalifragilistic end to Term Three. We were very busy researching information on our unit of work on Awesome Aussies. We spent quite a bit of time in class drafting our research which we used to write biographies about our chosen famous Australians. Our biographies included information about childhood, family life, adulthood, education, career achievements and highlights.

We used parts of our biographies to form short speeches about our chosen Awesome Aussies. It was a lot of fun preparing for this component of our assignment, as we got to create posters of our famous Australians and write palm cards to assist us with speaking in front of an audience. It was a little daunting talking and being recorded in class.

We had an ‘Awesome Aussies Afternoon’ which gave us the opportunity to dress up and pretend to be our chosen Australians. Many parents attended this event and had conversations with the students, asking them various questions relating to their famous lives. It was wonderful to see all of the students improvise and step into the roles of their Awesome Aussies.

The Year Fours took part in the MakerSpace program in Term Three and it was a huge success! The students learnt various design and technology skills and applied these to a series of tasks. We took part in four activities over the term which were: Straw Bees, Little Bits, We Do and Scratch. The Year Four students used Book Creator for each activity that they completed. These are great to view!

This term we have commenced learning more about persuasive writing. In class we wrote some permissive arguments for the topic ‘Homework is Unnecessary.’ We are focusing on segmenting our writing into an opening statement, followed by arguments and then a concluding statement.

In Religion, we have learnt that the Rosary helps Catholics to learn and meditate on the life of Jesus. Mary is the perfect Orans (which means figure of the Church). The Rosary is a special prayer which helps people think about and meditate on the life of Jesus. When we pray the Rosary, we remember the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We think about the important events in the lives of Jesus and his mother.

Last week was Mental Health Awareness Week and the students took part in a variety of activities which promoted this. It has been great to see the students share their thoughts and ideas about Mental Health.

Notre Dame Library is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair on Monday 1st November to Wednesday 3rd November to increase literacy across the school by encouraging our students to read. The fair will be open before school at 8am and after school at 3pm.

All proceeds from the sales of books will go towards books for the library.

The canteen relies on the help of volunteers to ensure that it runs smoothly, so I would like to thank those parents who have given up their time to volunteer last term, your help is appreciated. If you would like to join our volunteer pool please come and see me in the canteen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Even if you are only able to give half an hour of your time, every bit helps.

Welcome back, all!

After a quiet and peaceful holiday at OSHC, we began our first week back reminiscing the fun we had with our friends during vacation care.

Can you recognise us with these colourful masks?

We all learnt a trick or two when the circus came to town. We had a great time because everyone wanted to have go with everything offered and no one was afraid to fail!

We danced with our Educators and we defeated them in video games! We turned cardboard boxes into an aquarium or a jack-in-the-box. We made our own hand puppets with brand new socks!

We tied a piece of fabric with rubber elastic bands, sprayed food colours on it, and look what came out!

It’s not rocket science why we children are play maniacs. We LOVE things that go up high! The higher the rockets, or the singing pitch, or the skyscraper can go, the better!

Coming back in Week 1 of the new term, the swimming lessons during the day have left us hungry and tired when we arrive at OSHC. But, we know we can always kick back and relax in a bean bag and just watch the wheels go round and round… 🎶🎶🎶

Cloverdale Dental Clinic is open from 8am – 4pm Monday to Friday.

We are a free service and cater for school age children/teens from Kindy & Pre-Primary from the year they turn 5 to the end of year 11 or their 17th Birthday, whichever occurs first.

We are a Bachelor of Oral Health Final year placement clinic during university semesters. An experienced tutor oversees all check-ups and procedures.

It is not compulsory to enrol with the School Dental Service, if your children are having regular dental check-ups and treatment with their private family dentist, please feel free to remain with them.

If your address has changed/changes, please call us, as we send appointments to your home address, we also require current mobile phone numbers to send out text message reminders.

If your child has a toothache, please phone us on 9479 7222 between 8am-4pm, if you have an emergency outside of work hours, please contact your family dentist or the Emergency Service on 1800 098 818.
