Immunization Requirements
Iowa Immunization Requirements
Jody Pierce BSN RN
Clayton Ridge MS/HS Nurse
Iowa Immunization Law requires:
- All students entering 7th grade to have the Meningococcal vaccine AND a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, or whooping cough) booster before school starts in the fall.
- All students entering 12th grade to have a second dose of the Meningococcal vaccine before school starts this fall. This dose must be given after the age of 16. (One dose meets the requirement if it was received when the child was 16 years of age or older.)
Students WILL NOT be allowed to start school in the Fall of 2022 without proof of these vaccines or a valid exemption on file.
Iowa Law also requires:
- All students entering 9th grade have a dental screening by a dentist or dental hygienist within one year before the start of school, but no later than 4 months after the school year has started.
Please feel free to call or email with any questions.
Having health insurance is critical for our children to thrive at school. There are free and low-cost health coverage options available through Medicaid and Hawki which include coverage for medical, dental, immunizations, prescriptions, mental health services and more. You can have a regular doctor for your child and be protected from unexpected accidents and illness. Many working families qualify; children and teens in a family of 4 earning up to $80,030 may qualify for Hawki. And don’t forget, if your child is already enrolled in these programs, it’s important to renew their coverage every year so they can get the care they need when they need it. The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) can assist with in-person application assistance for families with children through presumptive eligibility. You may contact your local Hawki Outreach Coordinator at 563-556-6200 or for more information go to https://dhs.iowa.gov/hawki or call 1-800-257-8563.

CREL Thanks Mr. Wahls with a Personal Rock Concert
The elementary surprised Mr. Wahls with his own personal rock concert as a final farewell as he will no longer be the elementary principal.
The classic Journey song, “Don’t Stop Believing” was rewritten to focus on Mr. Wahls.
Staff and students celebrated Mr. Wahls as he transitions to his new role as full-time superintendent. Mr. J wrote meaningful lyrics to the tune of "Don't Stop Believin'" for students to share with Mr. Wahls.
Associate Mr. Jason Tipsword wrote the following lyrics for the parody:
Just a small town boyBorn and raised in Garnavillo
Got his education and come back home
Just a small town school
With a little inspiration
Hard work and dreams can take us anywhere
A singer in a 80's air band
Ninja warrior and 4-time dad
Training mustangs, he shares his light
With I can, I will, I must, and on
Pops a Bang can
Up and down the corridor
Reminding us to do what's ri-ght
Ready, respectful
Not afraid to say I love you
Reminding us, do what's ri-ght
Jumps off stage and swings on ropes
Supports his students' dreams and hopes
Giving anything to show support
Just one more time
Healthy body, healthy mind
Shows eagle pride from every side
Our guy's character never ends
It goes on and on and on and on
Pops a Bang can
Up and down the corridor
Reminding us to do what's ri-ght
Ready, respectful
Not afraid to say I love you
Reminding us, do what's ri-ght
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Eagles, eagles!
Don't stop believin'
Hold on
Eagles, eagles
Don't stop believin'
Hold on to that feelin'
Eagles, eagles!

Fourth Grade Farm Tour
Clayton County Farm Bureau assigned Mrs. Friedlein's class a farmer penpal. We have been writing letters back and forth with Jessi Lansing. She has told us about her farm and invited us to her work for a tour. We went to Pattison Dairy farm! We loved it and had a lot of fun!

Fifth Graders Enjoy Osborne
5th graders learned about plant identification and pioneer life and enjoyed fishing.
It was a fantastic day for fifth graders at Osborne participating in a Pioneer Day! Students identified pioneer plants, made butter for biscuits, went fishing and toured the Pioneer Village at Osborne. Students cooked their lunch over a fire (we may have snuck in some “pioneer” s’mores😆). So much fun and learning!

The seventh-grade students visited the Lockmaster House in Guttenberg to continue their Iowa History studies. Thank you to the volunteers who gave us tours!
Seventh Grade Visit Motor Mill

Fifth Grade Pizza Party in the Park
5th graders enjoyed a pizza part and then played in the park! May is a great month for fun outdoors!
Parents joined their 5th-grade student for a picnic, indoors due to the heat. Students are celebrating the end of their elementary careers! The Hansel family also treated the students to pizza, juice and cookies, while Diana Werger made the 5th graders a graduation cake! It was a great week!
Art with Mrs. Deutmeyer
Mrs. Deutmeyer was able to complete art lessons with 5th graders! Students weaved paper and found inspiration from Op Artist, Bridget Riley. They discussed optical illusions.

Clayton Ridge Elementary is a PBIS School. We use a ticket system to recognize and notice positive behavior in the classroom and across school settings for showing Eagle Pride (Ready, Respectful, Responsible, and Safe). Each month students have the opportunity to turn in tickets for tangible items or activities. At the end of each year, all unspent tickets are placed in a raffle to win toys and games for the summer!
