Sophomores in the Graphic Design and Visual Communications Program had the opportunity to visit Reynolds DeWalt in New Bedford. They were able to see the concepts they have been learning through projects they designed in the program Adobe InDesign. Students saw firsthand, six color offset printing presses, digital printing, die-cut machines, pantone inks, and binding.

This past week the preschool had Christmas parties and made candy Christmas trees and gingerbread houses. Miss Christine’s class had a parent come in and play his guitar for a holiday sing-a-long. Santa came to visit the preschool and the children were overjoyed and excited to tell him what they want for Christmas.

We would like to congratulate Andy, from Project Growth, who has been volunteering with us for three years! He just got a job with the YMCA! Good luck Andy!

Hedge Elementary was thrilled to have Officer Miranda return to Hedge for a visit on Monday. She previously attended fourth and fifth grade at Hedge after arriving in America from Brazil. This made her uniquely qualified to address our students in these same grades, many of who are also recent immigrants. Using anecdotes from her own life she modeled the importance of staying focused on what you want for the future and making good choices along the way. She specifically discussed the dangers of vaping and other drug use.

Nora and Megan from the New England Aquarium provided IBES youngsters with an imaginary trip to tide pools. They explained how tide pools are formed and the importance of this ecosystem. The children were allowed to investigated the creatures. Mrs. Lane's kindergarten class is pictured here.

Students in grade four were challenged within their Project-Based Learning experience to take some new knowledge they gained from a recent unit on "sound waves" and apply it to the design and construction of musical instruments made from completely recycled materials. Even more impressive than the actual instruments was the students' ability to explain what they had done, and how they reflected upon this within the design and engineering process. Congratulations to Ms. Macaluso and her students for all of their hard work!

NMES is saying Good Bye to our very special Head Custodian, Mr. Dave Cowan. We surprised Dave with a special assembly to honor his hard work, dedication and kindness. We unveiled the Dave Cowan Book Collection for our NMES Library, featuring books about rescue and service dogs. Each class wrote a song, poem or story to add to a special book for Mr. Cowan. The NMES Ukulele All Stars led our school in a sing-along, and all the students had a chance to say Good Bye in a special way in this video:

Sixth grade students created light up holiday cards as part of a STEM activity planned with our Library Media Specialist, Ms. Freitas. Students were excited as they created a series of circuits out of copper tape, LED lights, and a battery.

Mr. Boutin's French classes shared good tidings with their teachers and peers by visiting several classrooms to sing French versions of holiday classics.

Students in Mrs. LaFontaine's art classes used colorful wax shavings to create decorative candles. Their neatly wrapped artwork will make make great holiday gifts for friends and family.
