Mission
Meet our Principal, Laurie Matthews
I am from Fairbanks, and I attended UAF, where I earned my bachelor's degree in education. My graduate degree is in educational administration. My husband and I moved our family to Eagle River in 2000. I taught for the Anchorage School District for five years; first as a second-grade teacher at Tudor Elementary, and then as a middle school language arts teacher at Gruening Middle School. I took a break from the classroom when our youngest was born and started a business teaching homeschooled students math and writing, which I continued for 14 years. During this time, I also tutored public school students in most subjects. I returned to the Anchorage School district as a sponsor teacher for Family Partnership in 2020. I became the Dean of Students in 2022 and the Assistant Principal in 2023.
I am a former homeschooling parent. My homeschooling journey began with Family Partnership when our son started 1st grade, and he is now 17. While it wasn't always easy, teaching my own child was an absolute joy. One aspect of being a homeschooling parent that I highly valued was the ability to always choose the best possible curriculum to complement my son's academic strengths and support the areas that I was concerned with. Sometimes this meant reaching out to my sponsor teacher and brainstorming curriculum choices that may be a better fit and then pivoting for success. Flexibility and solid guidance are the keys. Your sponsor teachers are here to assist you in selecting the right fit of curriculum and help you make your choice to homeschool work for your family. I am honored to serve the families, teachers, and staff of Family Partnership as the Principal.

Close Up Trip to Washington D.C. Interest
We are looking into the possibility of offering a trip to Washington DC in the future. Please fill out the interest form below to indicate your preferences on our trip. Costs are dependent on the timing of the trip, but you can expect the total to be somewhere in the ballpark of $2,500 - $4,000. You would be able to use a portion of your allotment to go towards some of the costs. The actual cost will be communicated prior to any commitment to the trip. In addition to going on the trip, high school students can earn a 0.5 credit for a US Government course that you would be completing during the semester that the trip takes place.
23/24 Sponsor Teacher Requests
At Family Partnership, we feel that matching the just right sponsor teacher for each family is an integral part of building the student/ parent/ teacher partnership. Therefore, we do allow parents to request their sponsor teachers. The school administrator will make every effort to accommodate parent requests; however, there is no guarantee that all requests be able to be met due to teachers being full. To send in a request, email the principal at matthews_laurie@asdk12.org
