We have a new opportunity for student academic support on Wednesday afternoons from 2:45pm – 4:15pm in the Learning Commons. Students can come and do schoolwork in a supported, supervised setting. We will have faculty/staff support along with upperclass peer tutors (especially skilled in Math) available each Wednesday.

Students will identify their priorities (“What I Need” or “What’s Important Now”), create a plan for the most efficient use of their time, celebrate their accomplishments, and leave with a plan for continued success. Students do not need to sign up in advance for WIN Time. We do ask that students plan to be there for the start at 2:45pm so they can benefit from the full support.

Attention All Eastview Students and Families. We are honored to once again be partnering with the Play for Patrick Foundation to be able to provide FREE Heart Screenings on October 30 from 9am-4pm at Eastview High School.

There are still several openings available for students and young adults between the ages of 14-24 for FREE Heart Screens! Register and/or sign-up to volunteer at www.playforpatrick.org Of particular need are Cardiac professionals to help with EKG, Echocardiogram and physician consult. Students in District 196 will be provided breakfast and lunch at no cost during the 2021-22 school year due to a grant provided by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. All families are still encouraged to complete an Educational Benefits Application, formerly the free and reduced-price meals application. Upon approval, these benefits are extended to Activities/Athletics fees and more. A new application must be submitted each year.

Seniors, you can pick up your senior student ID cards at the West Entrance Security Office.

Masks Required on Buses and Inside Schools

State officials have given school districts the responsibility to determine COVID-19 mitigation strategies at the local level this school year. The 2021-22 COVID-19 Operational Plan for Families, Students and Visitors to Schools that was unanimously approved by our School Board on August 26 requires all students, staff and visitors in all District 196 buildings to wear a face mask indoors when the local transmission level is “substantial” or “high” as measured by the CDC transmission matrix. Currently, the transmission level in Dakota County is high, meaning face masks will be required in our schools to start the year, just as they are required to enter a growing number of businesses, government buildings and on all public transportation and airline flights.

Your partnership is critical to the success of our students. We expect students, staff and visitors to comply with the mask requirement, as outlined in Administrative Regulation 708.7, COVID-19 Masks, until the COVID-19 spread in Dakota County drops to the “moderate” level of transmission. Masks help reduce spread and give us the best opportunity to provide consistent in-person education all year. Just like last year, students will have opportunities for mask breaks during the day, such as at lunch or while outside. If parents and guardians are concerned about their child’s ability to safely wear a mask, they should refer back to Administrative Regulation 708.7 COVID-19 Masks.

Our district is committed to doing all we can to ensure students can continue learning in person this school year. This includes HEPA filters in all learning spaces, social distancing, recommending COVID-19 vaccinations for those who are eligible to receive them and requiring masks when the local transmission level is substantial or high.

Review and Update Emergency Information

If you haven’t already done so, please update your family’s information on record with the district by completing the online review in your Infinite Campus Parent portal account. This is the one time each year the district asks parents to complete the review to ensure schools have up-to-date contact information, emergency contacts, student health records and more. It is important for schools to have current information in order to be notified in case of emergency, changes in the school schedule and to receive regular communication from the schools and district.

All District 196 parents and guardians are encouraged to have an Infinite Campus Parent account of their own to stay involved in their child’s education, and to access end-of-term report cards, transcripts, attendance and other important information. Parents who do not have their own Infinite Campus Parent account can request an activation key from the office at their child’s school. For information on setting up an Infinite Campus Parent account and completing the online review, visit the Family Resources page on our district website.

PAYING FOR COLLEGE NIGHT

Join us for an evening with Chris George, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at St. Olaf College. He will be presenting important information on paying for college, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and understanding college financial aid award packages (ex. grants, loans, scholarships, and work study). 2021-2022 Free Application Opportunities at Minnesota Colleges and Universities

College Financial Aid information

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be available October 1st. Please go to www.fafsa.gov to complete this application. Information to assist in completing the application are also available on the FAFSA website. All seniors attending ANY type of post-secondary institution should complete the FAFSA.

Students should stop by the Counseling Office and get a pass to attend the college/university/military Rep Visit prior to the right visit. These university/college or military visits are small group meetings typically lasting 20-30 minutes. These admission reps are often times the same people that review college applications, so it's a great connection for students.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY TEAM HEADING TO STATE

It takes a village. Thanks to old and new teammates, parents, coaches, EV staff and fans. With your support, nine of our finest are headed to the State Cross Country meet. Congratulations! Kienna Loberg (3rd), Emily Percival (7th), Hadley Knight (12th), Sonja Olson (20th) Grace Swenson (22nd) , Grace Chambers (30th) and Robyn Dayton (32nd). The State Girls CC race will be held on Saturday November 6th at 10:30 on the St Olaf Campus. Please come cheer us on.

HUNTER DUNNE SECTION 3AAA CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPION; DUNNE AND GETMAN TO COMPETE AT STATE

The boys cross country team braved the cool drizzling weather outside to perform at today’s section 3AAA cross country race. Leading the day for the Lightning was senior Hunter Dunne who finished first overall to be named section champion! Dunne also broke the impressive 16 minute barrier ranking him the 4th fastest runner in Eastview history. As the race went out Dunne quickly positioned himself at the front of the field, followed closely by senior teammate Nate Getman. A front pack quickly separated themselves from the field, followed by a string of individual runners, and a small chase pack. At the front of this chase pack were seniors Ethan Agoranos and PJ LaSota. The main field followed about 30m behind this group and the final runners from Eastview, senior Max Leach, sophomore Charles Mathews, and senior Alex Breimhurst were in this pack.

About 900m into the race, Dunne took over the lead and began to separate himself from the lead pack of runners. By the 2k mark he had built a 15m lead. Slowly and steadily he turned the screws, extending his advantage meter by grueling meter to pull away from the competition and win by nearly 10 seconds, extending his advantage to approximately 60-70m by the end of the race. Getman tried to match Dunne’s move, trying to match his pace pick-ups and was in a solid #4 position 2,000m into the race, however found himself in no man’s land 15m behind and in front of his nearest competitors. The chase pack behind the lead group had fallen apart and turned into a string of individual runners, and in the middle of this string was Agoranos. LaSota fell back to the main pack, Mathews just 5 places behind him and Leach a few places behind that, and Breimhurst a few more back.

At the 3k mark Dunne had maintained his lead, Getman found himself in a battle with a chase pack that had reformed right behind him. Agoranos was trying to stick to the string of individuals he found himself in line with. While Eastview’s remaining 4 runners found themselves clumped together with a large group of athletes. Over the final 2,000m Agoranos continued to hold his position battling strongly to come in with a minute PR of a time of 17:12.3. Mathews had a strong last mile moving himself out of the pack of runners, picking off people ahead of him to finish only 7 places behind Agoranos in a new PR of 50 seconds with a time of 17:35. Breimhurst, matched Mathews moves over the last 2,000m putting on a characteristic push at the end of the race to also set a new personal best of 45 seconds with a time of 17:44.

Getman put on a strong sprint at the end of the race to move from 10th position to 8th overall securing himself a berth to the state meet with Dunne. Getman’s time of 16:20.6 was a 21 second PR for him and places him as the 11th fastest athlete in school history. Leach finished in 44th place overall and LaSota in 48th.

Getman and Dunne will next compete at the state cross country meet at St. Olaf College on Saturday, Nov 6th at 9:30 am.

JEYASRI VENKATASUBRAMANI COMPETES AT STATE TOURNAMENT IN TENNIS

Jeyasri Venkatasubramani's season comes to an end after a valiant effort in the state quarterfinals versus the number three seed. Amazing season and great career! Proud of you, Jeyasri!

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Boys volleyball has open gym again this Sunday night from 6-8 pm in the south gym. Come check it out if you want to learn more or you want to play next spring!

Intramural Basketball Informational Meetings

Intramural Basketball will have informational meetings on Thursday, Nov. 18th before school at 7:00am, and after school, at 2:35pm in C350. Registration will open on MyPaymentsPlus on Monday, Nov. 22nd, and remain open until Friday, December 17th. The cost is $100. Contact Mr. Pat Strey with any questions.

The National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) has released its annual ranking of debate and speech programs in the country. Eastview High School ranked 3rd out of over 3,000 schools nationwide for the 2020-2021 school year. The NSDA ranks programs by assessing both the quantity and quality of speech and debate team members; Eastview HS ranks highly because it has one of the nation's largest debate and speech programs and its students are competitively successful.

In June 2021, Eastview was named a National School of Outstanding Distinction in Speech and Debate for the second year in a row at the NSDA National Tournament (held virtually). This award, based only on competition results at the national tournament, placed Eastview in the Top 10 out of more than 1400 participating schools.
