We’ve had a great first Quarter and we are ready for an even better Quarter 2! This month’s tip for families is to conference with your child’s teacher and set goals for your child for Q2.

How Should Parents Navigate This All-Important Meeting? Educators Show the Way!
A key ingredient for educational achievement is the parent-teacher conference, and to make sure they're successful for both parents and teachers, we've come up with a list of what educators would like parents to know.
“We know parents are busy, but it is important to carve out time to invest in your child’s education and ensure success at school,” said National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel. “To get the most out of parent-teacher conferences, parents need to take an active role in their child’s education year-round and come prepared to discuss how their child can reach their full potential.”
Here are the rest of our tips for parents:
Get Ready. Do your homework prior to parent-teacher conferences. Prepare by writing notes to yourself concerning:
- Any questions about the school’s programs or policies.
- Things you can share with the teacher about your child and his life at home.
- Questions about your child’s progress.
Ask Important Questions
Don’t be afraid to engage in a frank conversation with your child’s teacher. Your goal is to develop an action plan for your child’s success at school. Good questions to ask the teacher include:
- What are my child’s strengths and weaknesses.
- How does my child get along with classmates?
- Is my child working up to their ability? Where could she/he use improvement?
- What can we do at home to support what you are doing in the classroom?
Initiate the Action Plan
Start immediately on the action plan you and the teacher put together. Discuss the plan with your child and track his/her progress. Stay in touch with your child’s teacher throughout the year with regularly scheduled “report card” conferences that can keep the communication lines open.
“Parents are the best resource for a child to make the grade,” said Van Roekel. “When teachers and parents work together, we can help a child have a successful school year.”
Learner Profile of the Month-November
IB Learner Profile: Risk-Taker
The IB Learner Profile aims to develop students who are risk-takers. Students who are risk-takers are able to approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought. They have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. Risk-takers are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs.
A child with a growth mindset has the ability to take risks.
You've probably been hearing a lot about growth mindset. Growth mindset is a valuable attitude that encourages children to have perseverance, to approach difficult tasks with confidence, and to focus on what is achievable with hard work. Below are some fun activities to encourage growth mindset and risk-taking.
- Turn a negative into a positive- "I can't do that!" vs."I can't do that...YET!"
- Famous Fails- Research famous people in history that failed, but came back even stronger!
- Character Counts- Read stories about characters that have faced obstacles and overcame them.
How can parents help to develop students who are Risk-Takers at home?
- If your child is feeling uneasy about trying something, encourage them to attempt it and have them reflect on how it felt.
- Set short term goals. Consider activities that push your child out of their comfort zone. Encourage them to offer their opinion, spend time learning a new activity, try a different food, learn a new game or even to spend time with someone they don't usually spend time with.
- Explain the difference between being a risk-taker (trying new things) and engaging in dangerous activities.
- Ask, "What's the hard part?" to identify the challenge and brainstorm ways to fix it.

Cookies & Milk with Santa on Thursday, December 8
Please join us for cookies and milk with Santa on Thursday, December 8 from 5:30 - 7:30. This event is hosted by the Pine View Elementary PTO at no cost to our PVES families. We will have sugar cookies to decorate with frosting, milk to drink, seasonal crafts, a station to write letters to Santa, and the Scholastic book fair.
