New News
JMS Open House - 9/14 @ 6:30-8:30PM
Open House will be held on Thursday, September 14th from 6:30 – 8:30 PM. The purpose of the Open House program is to promote positive school-to-home communication regarding individual classes and to highlight important expectations. This night is for you, the family members, to meet your child’s teachers and to get a general overview of the curriculum. You should not expect to have any one-on-one conference time with a teacher. If you need to talk to a teacher individually, please schedule an appointment with the teacher for a later date.
Family members will follow their child's schedule from Homeroom through Period 8. We only have enough seats in the classrooms for as many students as we have in each period. For this reason, it is imperative that you follow your child's schedule. Please plan to arrive in Homeroom a bit early as we will begin the program promptly at 6:30 PM. Student guides will be available to assist you with navigation throughout the building.
We will be following the schedule for Day 1. A copy of your child’s schedule will be emailed to you on September 13th. This email will come from noreply@mtlsd.net. Please bring this schedule with you to Open House.
We will also make the guest wifi password available in classrooms so that you can access your child’s schedule through dashboard. Below is the bell schedule that we will follow, in the event you arrive late and need to know where to go.
- Homeroom - 6:30-6:38 - 8 mins.
- Period 1- 6:42-6:52 - 10 mins.
- Period 2 - 6:56-7:06 - 10 mins.
- Period 3 - 7:10-7:20 - 10 mins.
- Period 4 - 7:24-7:34 - 10 mins.
- Period 5 - 7:38-7:48 - 10 mins.
- Period 6 - 7:52-8:02 - 10 mins.
- Period 7 - 8:06-8:16 - 10 mins.
- Period 8 - 8:20-8:30 - 10 mins.
In 6th and 7th grade, PE and music occur during the same period. For that reason, family members will only be able to visit one of these subjects during our Open House bell schedule, based on what class your child has on Day 1.
- Instrumental music teachers have important information to share regarding instrument management, rehearsals, and expectations. If your 6th or 7th grade child is enrolled in instrumental music, but does not take this course on Day 1, please contact Ms. Bitsko (sbitsko@mtlsd.net) and Ms. Wagner (kwagner@mtlsd.net) if you have any questions
- PE teachers have important information regarding curriculum, expectations, and routines. If your 6th or 7th grade child does not take PE on Day 1, please contact Mr. Urmann (jurmann@mtlsd.net), Mrs. Allan (mallan@mtlsd.net), or Mr. Pomaibo (mpomaibo@mtlsd.net) if you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, September 14th.
JMS Picture Day - 9/20
Our photographer is Wayne Bratten from Wayne’s World of Photography. All students will get their picture taken. If you do not want your child’s picture to be taken, please contact the office. Pictures will be taken outside, weather permitting.
Information about ordering pictures online will be shared with you in the coming weeks. You do not need to fill out any paperwork prior to picture day.
We are in need of a few volunteers to assist the children on picture day. If you are interested in volunteering please contact jmsptamtl@gmail.com.
Writing Lab Volunteers
Volunteering in the Writing Lab offers a flexible schedule and a priceless chance to help a child with their writing. There is absolutely no requirement for a volunteer to be a grammar expert! The teacher provides a streamlined conference sheet with a few targeted questions in regard to the content and organization of the student’s paper. The volunteer listens to the student read the paper aloud and then offers feedback in the areas designated by the teacher.
Both new and returning volunteers need to use the following link to sign up to help in the Writing Lab this year. 2023-24 JMS Writing Lab Volunteer Program Contact Mrs. Kelly via email at mkelly@mtlsd.net if you have questions. The first training session for both new and veteran volunteers will be held on Wednesday, September 20, from 9:30—11:00 a.m. in the JMS Writing Lab, Room 102. We will review and discuss the basic strategies used to conference with our students, and we will explain the operational aspects of our program.

Resources for Families
Safe2Say Something is a youth violence prevention program run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. The program teaches youth and adults how to recognize warning signs and signals, especially within social media, from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others and to “say something” BEFORE it is too late. With Safe2Say Something, it’s easy and confidential to report safety concerns to help prevent violence and tragedies.
Here’s how it works:
- Submit a report through the Safe2SaySomething system
- Crisis center reviews, assesses and processes all submissions
- Crisis center sends all submissions to school administration and/or law enforcement for intervention
- If needed, crisis center may contact tipster anonymously through the app
