Superintendent's Message
Hello JEFCOED Family,
I want to start off this newsletter by thanking everyone for a great first nine weeks of school! I was out at our campuses a lot during the first nine weeks. What I saw was a real sense of community where students, teachers, administrators, and staff members were all working towards a common goal: ensuring that quality teaching and learning was taking place. Your efforts are not going unnoticed. A special thanks also to our parents. We sincerely appreciate your partnership and your help in making sure our students are successful.
One other note about our principals. October is National Principals Month. Being a leader of a school is not a typical 9 to 5 job. From providing leadership, to counseling students, to attending athletic events, to hiring teachers, the work never ends. We are tremendously proud of all our administrators and appreciate their service to JEFCOED. If you haven’t already, please thank your principal when you see them.
At our most recent board meeting we recognized five of our schools for having chronic absenteeism rates of 10% or lower for the last school year. Congratulations to Erwin Middle School, Gardendale Elementary, Hueytown Intermediate, JCIB Middle, and McAdory Elementary. Thanks to our students and parents at these schools for making a commitment to be on time, all date, every day! I cannot stress enough how important attendance is for our students; they have to be in class to learn.
As I wrap up, I know this is a busy time of year for many people. Some of our fall sports teams are already participating in the playoffs, and others will begin their quest for a championship in the coming weeks. Good luck to all our athletes! Also, Halloween is next Tuesday. So please enjoy yourself and be safe! Finally, parents don’t forget that progress reports will go home on Thursday November 2nd. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher.
Sincerely,
Dr. Gonsoulin

McCalla Elementary Student Jumps Into Action to Save Friend
In a heart-pounding moment at McCalla Elementary, 5th-grader Robert Maldonado proved that heroes are all around us. During class, Robert noticed a fellow student was in distress. He sprang into action without hesitation, performing the Heimlich Maneuver and ensuring the safety of his peer. Join us in celebrating Robert as he receives accolades from his school, peers, and community, and press "play" to learn more about his heroic actions.
Numeracy November
By Dr. Angela Watkins, Director of Elementary Curriculum & Instruction
Welcome to November! November is a great time to reflect on the great things going in the name of Numeracy! Our students are becoming doers of mathematics! All classrooms are equipped with hands on manipulatives that can be used throughout the math lesson! Join us this year as we embark upon our mathematical journey so that our students' mathematical thinking can develop! We are kicking off Numeracy November the week of November 13th -17th, 2023. Check with your school's administrator to receive dates and times to attend Numeracy Night! In closing, don’t forget that math is all around you! In the grocery store, the mall, the gas station and even at the local park! Take time to point out those fun and exciting opportunities to connect math to the real world!
Science of Reading Spotlight School
Lipscomb Elementary School has been selected as one of The Alabama Reading Initiative's prestigious 2023-2024 Science of Reading Spotlight Schools. The ARI/The Alabama Reading Initiative's primary mission is to ensure that all students achieve proficient reading skills by the end of third grade. Being named a Science of Reading Spotlight School is a testament to the unwavering commitment of Lipscomb's educators, staff, and students in advancing early literacy. But what makes this award especially impressive? For the majority of the student body, English is not their first language. Watch the video to learn more!
The JEFCOED Fast Five!
Canoe Adventures
Another successful year of Canoe Adventures for our students with different abilities! It was an incredible week as our students experienced canoeing at Oak Mountain State Park, many for the very first time! Our annual canoe program brings together students with special needs to enjoy the beauty of nature and develop valuable life skills. They quickly discover that canoeing is an activity they can enjoy. Just check out those smiles!

This program allows candidates as young as 16 in 11th grade to earn industry recognized certifications and nationally recognized credentials. We already have four JEFCOED students on board! Jefferson County Schools are dedicated to preparing students for high-wage jobs upon graduation and becoming a leader in Central Alabama's workforce development.
JEFCOED Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage Month traditionally honors the cultures and contributions of both Hispanic and Latino Americans, as we celebrate heritage rooted in all Latin American countries. From street festivals to hallway parades to special lunchroom cuisine, JEFCOED students celebrated in style and also learned a great deal!
