Welcome to the spring semester, everyone! For returning students, I hope winter break has left you refreshed and ready for spring term. For new grad students, I relate to the combination of excitement and anxiety you are likely experiencing before your initial semester.

I’m a student in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, and I’m excited to work with all of you.

A new semester often means lots of new people and experiences. “New” is exciting, but it also can provoke a lot of anxious feelings. It is very common to feel anxious with new things, even if the new thing is something that you’ve always wanted or are very excited for. Here are some quick tips for managing anxiety:
- Don’t fight it. Fighting anxiety is a surefire way to intensify it. Instead, allow yourself to be anxious and remind yourself that you can do great things even while you’re anxious.
- Prepare. Put in the work ahead of time so that you’re the most ready you can be. Of course, this includes studying, but you can also practice being anxious! What happens to you when you get anxious? Many people say that they have a hard time quieting their mind. Every so often, what if you studied with an audiobook or music in your ear to practice having a busy mind? If things feel like they speed up for you, maybe you take some of the material from class and try to recite it in a “speed-round.”
- Breathe and relax. Many of us carry anxiety in our bodies. Taking time to focus on deep breathing and muscle relaxation may not remove the anxiety, but it can make it more bearable!
Anxiety is often cumulative, and as we add more and more stress to our lives, our ambient levels of anxiety ramp up, kind of like shaking a soda bottle. Just like slowly loosening the cap to let some of that fizz out, it’s important to take time for yourself to release a little bit of the anxiety you’re carrying around. A five-minute mindfulness break, time spent with a friend or loved one, a walk around the quad to admire the historic trees or even time spent alone doing nothing at all can be that little release you need to keep you going. And what if your soda bottle is ready to explode and you need help releasing the pressure? The Graduate School is hosting our 9th Annual Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) event on Thursday, March 30 at 5:30 p.m., which is open to all current grad students and to recent grad alumni who have graduated since September 2023. This internationally recognized event features student talks in a wide array of disciplines, from the sciences and business to the humanities and education fields (and everything in between). We consistently hear from our external advisory boards that employers value the ability to relay technical information to non-technical audiences (e.g., the media, policymakers, colleagues in other depts).
Learn more about this event on the national site or on Hood’s 3MT site. Here is a brief snapshot of the event as well. If you have completed a capstone, advanced project, thesis, portfolio, ceramics show, internship, etc., this is a great opportunity for you. You not only gain practice in a valuable skill, but there are three cash prizes for the winner and people’s choice awards. We have external judges from research and education to business leaders, who will decide the winning talk. The People’s Choice Awards will be determined by audience vote. It’s a great event to attend and cast your vote, even if you do not want to compete!
