International Baccalaureate
The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) at Shawnee Mission North is a two-year college preparatory program with a comprehensive academic program designed to address the needs of challenge seeking junior and senior students.
Currently there is no admissions process to become an IB Diploma candidate. It is an opt-in program. However, there are a few academic requirements that students must meet due to the IB courses that must be taken:
· Students need to have completed their PE, health, fine arts, and computer competency requirements during their 9th and 10th grade years.
· Students must have completed (at a minimum) Spanish 3, French 3 by the end of their 10th grade year.
· Students must have completed (at a minimum) Algebra 2 by the end of their 10th grade year.
IB Current Activities
Students in the North IB Program continued an exciting semester of learning and creating understandings. The courses allow students to experience the rigors of life after high school and give opportunities to develop a growth mindset as well as the grit necessary for success.
FOCUS ON IB HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS-
In December, both years of the IB History of the Americas course, in collaboration with the International Relations class visited the White House Decision Center in Independence, Missouri. We were fortunate to be able to visit even though the Truman Library is under renovation. Students engaged in independent inquiry and preparation as well as role-playing the positions of president, cabinet and advisors. The topic under consideration was the 1945 decision by President to utilize the atomic bomb on the Empire of Japan.

FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know what makes a school meal? Students must choose a full portion of at least three of the five components to receive a full school lunch and at least one component must be a 1/2 cup of fruit or vegetable. Components include entrée, grain, fruit, vegetable, and milk. There are unlimited (single trip) fruits and vegetables available, except for juice and potatoes. Please help by encouraging your student to take what they want, but eat what they take in order to reduce waste. Remember milk is offered, but not required to be taken.
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at https://www.smsd.org/about/departments/food-service.
