Celebrating the Classics
Back in the day...
In the 1919 Orange and Black Annual Yearbook, the high school band was pictured in a creative drawing. The 1919 high school band was the first successful organized band for the New Richmond High School. Under the direction of Arthur Anderson, many young men volunteered to play in the band at school activities and athletic contests.

Featured Grade Levels, Departments and Events!
Each month we highlight a grade level, department or group that strives to share our District's story with the community.
NRHS Science Department
This month we have chosen to highlight the NRHS Science Department.
The NRHS Science Department has been performing many different types of experiments. In Mr. Ziller's class, students were able to participate in a lab to track heat flow. The purpose of this lab was to study the flow of heat and the physical quantity called specific heat. The first part of the lab that students were able to participate in was determining the heat flow out of the metal calorimeter cup. A student accounted for all the sources of heat that could escape from the apparatus in order for the calorimeter cup to be reliable for determining the specific heat of a material. Interestingly enough, Einstein himself, in the development of Quantum Theory, found that quantum mechanics explained long-standing puzzles concerning the Theory of Specific Heat. Having an opportunity to perform hands on experiments provided students with the chance to learn by doing, rather than simply reading about a topic. Experimenting is something that students strive to do, especially when in the Science Department. Teaching and learning in a variety of ways helps to create interest and passion, and science experiments are one way to do this!
NRMS English Department
This month we have chosen to highlight the NRMS English Department.
Throughout the month of March, the 6th grade Literature students in Mrs. Little and Ms. Kelly's classes embarked on a new adventure in research! Students learned the basics of research, and eventually worked their way into researching on their own and creating a research paper. They kicked off their new Research Unit with a lesson in the Media Center with David Maas, the Library Media Specialist. Mr. Maas introduced the students to available print and digital resources within the School District of New Richmond, to help guide their research. Working with both print and digital resources helped to broaden the students' topic ideas that they chose to perform research on. In this unit, students developed a research question, evaluated sources, and wrote a research paper that taught the class about their chosen topic. It is so exciting for students to learn more about their own interests through self-conducted research!
Hillside 4th Grade Classes
The 4th Grade Classrooms at Hillside Elementary celebrated Pi Day on Tuesday, March 14! They learned about the match concept of pi through entertaining activities and crafts. Students worked in triads to complete a pi web scavenger hunt, created beautiful pi inspired circle art and read fun books like "Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi" as well as "I Am Albert Einstein!" They concluded their celebration by enjoying delicious individual pies during snack time. A special thanks to Walmart in New Richmond for donating the delicious pies for our students and staff to enjoy!
Paperjack 3rd Grade Classes
The 3rd Grade classes at Paperjack are currently in the midst of a Book Challenge! Students are racing to read 25 chapter books, or reading-level appropriate books, between February 1st and the end of the school year. In addition, each student has a bookmark that contains story elements for each student to complete. If students read and fill out 25 bookmarks, they will receive a Culver's token for a free scoop of ice cream, which was donated by Culvers owner, Jason Caruso. The goal of this exciting Book Challenge is to continue to engage students in reading through the end of the year!
Starr 5th Grade Classes
Over the summer, the 5th grade teachers at Starr took part in a Building Thinking Classrooms Professional Development opportunity. During math lessons, students in groups of 2 or 3 stand at vertical non permanent boards to solve math tasks. These surfaces encourage students to take risks with active thinking and motivates them to share their knowledge with others. Teachers really enjoy seeing the student energy and engagement in their learning while using these boards. In addition to learning powerful math skills and strategies, students have also been working hard on more interpersonal skills with the vertical boards. These skills include working with other classmates and learning how to communicate effectively with others. The tasks given at the boards require thinking, and can act as a reinforcement or extra practice of the skill being taught in class, or an extension activity. Our students look forward to every chance they have to work at vertical boards!
