Reardan Weekly

Senior Sunrise
We had a great turnout for the Senior Sunrise on Wednesday morning! It was cold but the students enjoyed a yummy breakfast provided by the parents.
Reardan Community,
We are very excited to be embarking on a journey to include more locally-sourced foods into our nutrition program. We are highlighting potatoes this month from the Hutterites, and are looking for local farmers who may be interested in being highlighted for beef or pork. The meat would need to go through a USDA processing plant. If you are interested, please email me directly at esobotta@reardansd.net Also, as we begin to utilize our greenhouse, our students will begin to grow vegetables to be used in our salad bar. Be on the lookout for new locally sourced foods to be highlighted periodically this year, and more regularly in years to come!
Elementary Highlights
As the cooler fall weather approaches, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the changing temperatures. Layers are a great option, as mornings can be chilly, but afternoons may warm up. Be sure to send your child with a jacket or sweater, and don’t forget hats and gloves for those extra cool mornings. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing helps our students stay focused and ready to learn throughout the day. Thank you for your attention to this as we move into the fall season!
The elementary lost and found is overflowing with unclaimed items. Please take a moment to check the school's Lost and Found! We have collected quite a few jackets, lunch boxes, and other items that may belong to your child. Be sure to stop by during school hours to see if anything looks familiar before the items are donated after conference week. Reminder: Labeling your child's name on coats and hoodies helps us return lost items more easily. Thank you!
Preschool is studying trees, so they went on a "leaf walk". They went around campus and looked at the different types of trees and noted how each tree has a different leaf or different bark.
2nd grade students in Mrs. Whitfield's class explored the huge variety of spiders that exist. After learning about spiders and how they catch their prey, students made Spider Climbers. They built a spider out of paper and string, and then watched as their spiders climbed!
Missing just 2 days a month means a child misses 10% of the school year. It is absolutely crucial for the success of your child that they come to school. This is a snapshot from this week of attendance from Reardan Elementary Year-to-Date:
Middle School Highlights
Middle School Students have had a great week of learning and growing. We are excited to introduce you to our incredible counseling and support staff–Catheryn Logwood, Maddie Drennen, Elisabeth Roberts, and Darren Mattozzi. This group of amazing adults are here each day to support our students’ mental health and help them be the most successful students they possibly can. This week Catheryn and Elisabeth launched our Clayful App for grades 7 and 8. Students were able to log in, complete a fun activity, and some students chose to chat with a coach. As a reminder, students 12 and younger will bring home parent permission slips to complete if they would like the option of chatting with a coach.
Along with our Clayful work in the social emotional learning area, Mrs. Hamilton’s students are completing informational brochures to teach others about issues such as depression, anxiety, phobias, and other challenges that can be overcome through support. This is part of our comprehensive plan to help our students achieve State Standards and Benchmarks in Social Emotional Learning. See more from OSPI about this here.
Thank you parents for your support in helping our students keep their cellphones and other electronic devices “away for the day”. Students are expected to store these items in their lockers (we provide locks on request in the HS office) during the school day. We have seen a HUGE improvement this week in student devices being away for the day. We know this helps our students focus on their learning and also cuts down on conflict that happens via social media. Keep up the good work!
Finally, our counseling team will be visiting classrooms this month to teach and review our state and district laws, policies, and procedures around Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB). Each year we educate students on this topic and include steps to take if they feel these things are happening to them. We cover the difference between Bullying and Conflict as well as who and how to report problems. Our district webpage has more information regarding HIB here. We also have a new anonymous tip site: https://hearmewa.org/ This can be used to report concerns anonymously. You can always come and talk with Ms. Newsum regarding middle school student concerns. dnewsum@reardansd.net
High School Highlights

We also had the opportunity to take 26 seniors to the Senior Summit at the Spokane Convention Center, where they engaged with college representatives and leaders from the trades. The students represented Reardan well and gained valuable insights for their futures.

Options Program Highlights
Due to the number of kindergartners in our Options program this year we were excited to be able to offer a K-1 age group for enrichment classes instead of a K-3 band. Our K-1 enrichment program is designed to foster a love of learning and provide essential skills for young children while offering individualized instruction and participating in super fun classes! Through engaging activities, we focus on developing social skills, beginning reading and math skills, and a strong foundation in the arts. Our play-based approach encourages exploration and creativity, while physical activity promotes healthy development. By partnering with parents, we create a supportive and nurturing environment where children can thrive.
Options 4-8 students are exploring the exciting world of 3D design with TinkerCAD and having a blast doing it! They're learning to create their own personalized name tags by dragging and dropping shapes, adding text, and experimenting with different colors and textures. It's a fun and engaging way to develop creativity and problem-solving skills.
The Options team is in the final stages of developing the Enrichment Class Schedule for 2nd quarter which starts November 12th . Watch for the sign up to be posted next week! Our next field trip is in the works and tentatively scheduled for Nov. 1st. Watch for more details soon.

Health Corner
Dear Reardan families,
As part of our commitment to student health, we will be conducting hearing and vision screenings for students in grades Pre-K through 3rd, 5th and 7th grades this year. These screenings are important for identifying any potential issues that may affect your child's learning and overall well-being.
The screenings will take place throughout the month of October. If your child requires any follow-up assessments, we will notify you soon! If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the school nurse at 509-381-1340.
Thank you for your support in promoting your child's health!
Warm regards,
Shannon Landt
