Elementary Highlights
Reminders:
No school on Monday, January 20, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Additionally, Friday, January 24, is an early release day, with school dismissing at 11:30 a.m.
Parents, please remember to call the school office before 1:30 p.m. if there are any changes to your child’s end-of-day plans. This ensures we have enough time to communicate the changes to your child and their teacher, helping to avoid confusion or delays during dismissal.
Students should not bring electronics, such as tablets or gaming devices, to school. Additionally, cell phones must be put away by 7:45 a.m. and remain stored during the school day. This helps minimize distractions and ensures a focused learning environment for all students. Thank you for your support!
P.I.E. Updates:
The next Popcorn Friday will be January 31st instead of the 24th, due to early release.
Remember, Popcorn Fridays will now take place on the second and fourth Friday of every month.
Save the Date: Daddy-Daughter Dance will be held on Saturday, February 8 in the Commons. Please follow the Reardan P.I.E. Facebook page for more information.

Middle School Highlights
Students are having fun this month finding tiny ducks hidden in the HS building each day. Once they find a duck they bring it to the office for a small treat. It’s a great way to bring joy to January! Thanks to JoLynn Ray for organizing this fun activity. Jason Anderson has also been working on creating a positive student environment by handing out blue sticky note challenges in the mornings. These challenges range from “skip down the hall for 10 seconds” to “challenge someone to a thumb war, best ⅔” or even, “Ask Ms. Newsum how her day is going.” Students are challenged to various types of social interactions as a way to build positive relationships. Mr. Anderson spends the mornings before school, mid-morning break, and lunchtime with our middle school students, so he has lots of opportunities for interaction. He’s doing a fantastic job of creating a fun, caring environment for our students.
Our counseling team has planned some different activities for January as well. Kristy Koch is working on weekly journals via Clayful having to do with time management and how improving this skill can lessen feelings of being overwhelmed and anxious. One key point of Kristy’s lesson was substituting the phrase, “I didn’t have time for ________________.” for “___________ wasn’t important to me.” Students making this shift are beginning to realize that we don’t “have” time, we instead “make” time for the things we really want to accomplish. Elisabeth Roberts did her monthly lesson on things we can and can’t control–or Locus of Control. Students were really engaged in different activities including role playing scenarios where they had to decide what they had control of and how to set boundaries. This is an incredible life skill for our middle school students to begin learning. Finally, Catheryn Logwood did her monthly Clayful lesson on time management as well. Students created graphs of their day and labeled them with the activities they spent time doing. They then listed areas they needed to improve their focus on and made changes to their time logs. Our middle school students are so blessed to have these caring adults helping them focus on social emotional learning standards like grit and perseverance so they can be successful.

Winter Health Update from the School Nurse
As we keep moving into winter, it's important to keep a few key health tips in mind to ensure that everyone stays safe and healthy throughout the season:
1. Cold Weather Precautions:
Cold temperatures can cause hypothermia and frostbite. Please remind your child to dress warmly in layers, including coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and insulated boots. It's also essential to wear waterproof clothing to protect against snow and wet conditions. Temperatures are dropping next week so please reach out if your child is in need of any winter gear.
2. Preventing Winter Illnesses:
Winter is prime time for colds, flu, and respiratory illnesses. Encourage your child to practice regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, and avoid touching their face. If your child feels sick or has flu-like symptoms (i.e. fever, chills, body aches, congestion, cough, or nausea/vomiting), please keep them at home to help prevent spreading germs.
3. Health Care:
The school-based health clinic is available to support your child's health needs throughout the winter season. If you’d like to schedule an appointment for any reason or have any questions, please contact me at 509-381-1340. We’re here to help keep your child healthy and ready to learn!"
4. Safe Play and Physical Activity:
Outdoor play in winter weather can be a lot of fun, but be cautious about icy surfaces. Make sure your child is wearing proper footwear to prevent slips and falls. Additionally, encourage indoor physical activities when it's too cold to be outside for long periods.
5. Keeping Hydrated:
Even though it's colder, it’s still important to drink plenty of water. Dehydration can happen in the winter just as easily as in the summer, so remind your child to stay hydrated, especially after physical activity.
6. Mental Health Awareness:
The shorter days and colder weather can sometimes affect mood and energy levels. If you notice any changes in your child’s behavior or emotional state, please reach out to school staff or a healthcare provider for support.
Stay warm, stay healthy, and let’s make it through winter together!
If you have any concerns or questions about your child's health, feel free to reach out to the school nurse at 509-381-1340.
Warm regards,
Shannon Landt, RN
