Quetzal News
January 15, 2025
From Ms. O's Desk
Dear Quetzal Families,
I hope you're having a wonderful week! Since returning from Winter Break, we’ve been working diligently with our students to ensure they have an enriching academic experience. We continue to focus on helping your child grow in reading, mathematics, and biliteracy.
In the coming weeks, we’ll concentrate on preparing our English Learners for the ELPAC testing. We’re excited to see their progress this year and work toward reclassification. This is a great time to reflect on the importance of biliteracy and support our students in becoming fluent speakers in both English and Spanish.
We warmly invite parents of our English Learners to attend our ELAC meeting this Friday, where we will share information about ELPAC testing and provide tips on how to support your child at home.
Additionally, we encourage all parents to consider joining our school’s leadership groups. At the end of the school year, there will be openings on our ELAC and PTA boards. These are incredible opportunities to take an active role in shaping our school community while staying closely involved in your child’s educational journey. If you’re interested, please email me at coalciregui@mvwsd.org.
Lastly, there’s still time to contribute to our PTA and Walkathon fundraisers. Every dollar donated goes directly toward enriching our students' experiences through extracurricular activities and programs. Thank you for your generosity and dedication to our community, and thank you for all you do to support our students and staff. Wishing you a fantastic rest of the week!
Warm regards,
Claudia Olaciregui, Principal
5th Grade News for Middle School
Regardless of their assigned middle school, students who completed 5th grade at Gabriela Mistral Elementary will have the opportunity to take the Spanish History/Social Studies course at Graham Middle School next year.
The Spanish History/Social Studies course is a core academic class offered only at Graham Middle School that follows the grade level standards for Social Studies. This class takes the place of the required social studies class taught in English and uses the district-adopted TCI History Alive! Curriculum.
Stay tuned! Details on how to take the Graham Spanish History/Social Studies class next year will be shared at an upcoming Principal’s coffee with Ms. O and through email.
For now, all 5th grade families should complete the open enrollment process starting Jan 21 to confirm your middle school enrollment for next year. The enrollment system will assign your child a middle school based on your address. More details about how Mistral 5th-graders/incoming Crittenden students can register for the Graham class are to come.
